Back when he was finishing “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, Jeff Daniels was ready to leave show business. “I’m done,” he told Jim Carrey. “You can’t stop man,” Carrey said. “You can’t, you’re creative, you’re going to create something, you’ve got to keep creating. That’s what we do!”
These days, Carrey’s off in Hawaii painting. And when Daniels is not acting, he’s writing songs and plays, which he mounts at his Michigan hometown’s Purple Rose Theatre Company. “It’s what keeps me going,” Daniels told me on Zoom. “It keeps me alive. It’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s helped me between the phone calls for the acting jobs. Because you can go insane staring at that phone. They’ll call you when they need you. And so I’ve always battled whatever depression or fear might...

American Rust showrunners Dan Futterman and Adam Rapp finally gave an update on Season 3 of the Amazon Prime Video series, but it is rather discouraging.
All 10 episodes of American Rust Season 2 (subtitled Broken Justice) were released on Prime Video on March 28, two-and-a-half years after Season 1 premiered.
The show follows Jeff Daniels' Del Harris, a police chief in Pennsylvania trying to solve multiple murders and figure out how they are connected to a bigger threat.

Ang Lee broke ground on films like “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” developing new camera systems to experiment with de-aging and high-frame rates in 3D. But as the old adage goes, you’re only as good as your last picture, and in the case of the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” director, he hasn’t released a new movie since 2019’s “Gemini Man” bombed at the box office. As did “Billy Lynn,” a movie that could only be shown properly in a small handful of screens, before it underperformed in 2016.

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney drama American Rust is returning for its second season — on its third platform.
Amazon announced that the sophomore run — titled American Rust: Broken Justice — will premiere on its Prime Video platform rather than the previously announced ad-supported service Freevee. All 10 episodes of the season will debut in a binge drop on March 28.
The drama was originally developed for Showtime, which canceled the show after its first season aired. Freevee picked up American Rust for season 2 in June 2022, with the show now airing on the Amazon flagship service. With Amazon having formally added ads to its Prime Video platform, Freevee programming has been migrating to the larger Prime Video.

In 1997, the Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble in a motion picture was expected to go to a “serious” nominee like The English Patient (which would go on to win the best picture Oscar), Sling Blade or Marvin’s Room (boasting a cast including Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio). But The Birdcage swooped in for a surprise win.
Producer-director Mike Nichols and writer Elaine May had adapted the film from the French stage farce La Cage Aux Folles, moving the story of a gay couple who own a nightclub in Saint-Tropez to Miami, where Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, as Armand and Albert Goldman, become increasingly stressed out when Armand’s son, Val (Dan Futterman), comes to visit with his fiancée (Calista Flockhart) and her ultraconservative parents. The cast is rounded out by Hank Azaria as the Goldmans’ housekeeper, Christine Baranski as Val’s mother and Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest as Republican Sen.

Striking writers in New York City said they disrupted filming of FBI: Most Wanted for a second straight day by heading off a planned location shoot at a public park in Brooklyn on Friday morning and later by causing slowdowns of work on the Dick Wolf-ep’d crime drama starring Dylan McDermott and Alexa Davalos at a nearby soundstage.
Union organizers tipped off to a location shoot at Monsignor McGolrick Park in the Greenpoint neighborhood showed up at 7 a.m. Friday morning and waited, but no film crew showed up, representatives from the Writers Guild of America East told Deadline.
It was unclear whether the show’s producers paused filming because of picketers, but WGA representatives said they saw call sheets confirming the shoot there, and they took credit for intercepting it before it could get underway.

Are there any sweeter words in the age of too much TV than “limited series?” It’s a category that guarantees minimal time commitment with maximum return — be it weekly watercooler gossip or a delicious binge. The limited series is the perfect hybrid between a movie and a longer-running TV series, with intricate stories, complex characters, and just the right amount of moving parts. The fact that a series will not return makes the narrative precious and the ending paramount, even if that means leaving things deliberately open-ended. This one-off nature makes them perfect for literary adaptations, epic events, and period pieces.
What doesn’t qualify? Those that started as limited series but then blew up enough to get a second season. We’ve also limited (ha!) ourselves to scripted for now, since Ken Burns will probably deserve his own ranking down the line, once he slows down and we...

Most of the movies we’ve enjoyed over the last hundred years consist of 24 frames per second, but we’ve seen directors experiment with a high-frame-rate more and more. One director who has pushed Hfr to its limits is Ang Lee, who shot his last two movies, Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk and Gemini Man, at 120fps. When it was announced that Ang Lee would be directing a Bruce Lee movie, many expected that he would once again shoot the film at 120fps; after all, Bruce Lee was known for his lightning-fast moves, which a traditional camera could barely pick up. Our own Chris Bumbray recently spoke with Ang Lee about the upcoming re-release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, where the director revealed that he will not be shooting the Bruce Lee movie in Hfr.

Angelina Jolie movies list is so loaded it’s hard to pick which is her very best and which are not so cool. My foolproof technique for doing this for any actor is to check what critics and audiences are saying across multiple channels. That’s exactly how I arrived at ranking Angelina Jolie’s movies from best to worst. In the end, you can hardly go wrong with the multiple award winning actress. Even the worst movies on the list feel somewhat watchable because of her graceful and charming personality. There are scarcely a handful of actors that come close to Jolie’s reputation.
This article highlights some of the best and worst movies on the Angelina Jolie movies list.

Ang Lee has cast his son Mason Lee to play the iconic Chinese-American martial artist and actor Bruce Lee in Sony’s 3000 Pictures’ new biopic.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has reportedly been working on the film Bruce Lee quietly for a long time. There have been different versions of scripts from four writers before the most recent one by Dan Futterman who’s the Oscar-nominated Capote screenwriter.
“Accepted as neither fully American nor fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese kung fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” said Ang Lee in a statement. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, known for helming ‘Life of Pi’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’, is set to direct a film about Chinese American martial arts legend Bruce Lee.
Ang Lee’s son Mason Lee will star in the film, which is in development at Sony’s 3000 Pictures.
Dan Futterman, who wrote ‘Capote’ and ‘Foxcatcher’, is adapting the script. Jean Castelli, Alex Law and Mabel Cheung and Wells Tower wrote earlier versions of the screenplay, reports ‘Variety’.
Bruce Lee, who died in 1973 at the age of 32, had a brief but lasting presence in Hollywood as an actor, director and martial arts expert.
His films, including ‘Fist of Fury’, ‘Enter the Dragon’ and ‘The Way of the Dragon’, as well as the TV series ‘The Green Hornet’, popularised martial arts across the globe in the late 1960s and early ’70s.

Mason Lee, the son of famed filmmaker Ang Lee, will play Bruce Lee in a forthcoming film of the same name for Sony’s 3000 Pictures. Ang will direct the project from a script written by Dan Futterman. Futterman is taking over scripting duties after Jean Castelli, Alex Law, Mabel Cheung, and Wells Tower penned previous versions of the story.
It’s challenging to overestimate Lee’s astronomical impact on the martial arts film genre. Already a star in Asia, Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon catapulted his star into the stratosphere in the West. Had he lived beyond the age of 32, Lee would have achieved the success of actors like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and more. Still, Lee is a household name despite his early passing, and few martial artists have risen to his level of notoriety since. Lee’s death was labeled “death by misadventure” by authorities,...

Having seen big success with the martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon more than two decades ago, director Ang Lee is now planning a film about one of the masters of screen combat: Bruce Lee. And he hasn't had to look too far for a star, casting his son Mason Lee in the lead.
According to Deadline, Ang and Mason have been planning this one for the last few years, with the latter committing to an extensive training programme through lockdown and beyond to get into fighting shape.
Bruce Lee, of course, needs little introduction as an icon of cinema and a Chinese-American groundbreaker who still faced racism and obstacles even as he became a global star. And, of course, he died shockingly young at 32, just before Enter The Dragon cemented his breakthrough.

Martial arts legend Bruce Lee is getting the biopic treatment. Oscar-winner Ang Lee is set to direct a film about the late actor, simply titled "Bruce Lee," for Sony's 3000 Pictures. What's more, the filmmaker has actually tapped his own son, Mason Lee ("The Hangover Part II") to star as the Hollywood icon in the upcoming biopic, making it a high-profile family affair.

Well, this is a shocker.
When TV shows are canceled, they usually fade away, with little hope of a revival.
The Amazon-owned streaming service Freevee has picked up American Rust, five months after its cancellation at Showtime.
Series stars Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney are set to return for the second season.
Produced by Boat Rocker and executive produced by Daniels, Dan Futterman, and Adam Rapp, the second season of the compelling crime drama set in a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town will stream exclusively on Freevee.
The move is especially surprising because the series is moving from premium cable to a free, ad-supported streaming service.
Based on Philipp Meyer’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, the first season of American Rust explored the tattered American Dream in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania through the eyes of police chief Del Harris (Daniels).

Amazon Freevee has come to the rescue for American Rust. Amazon’s free ad-supported VOD streaming service (formerly IMDb TV) has ordered a second season of the Rust Belt drama series that was canceled by Showtime in January. Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney are returning to lead the cast.
American Rust initially was ordered straight-to-series at USA Network in November 2017, but a few months later, the network opted not to move forward with it. At the time, sources said the order was contingent on the producers finding a big star for the lead, which didn’t happen. It then moved to Showtime, with Daniels attached to star and executive produce, where it aired for one season. The network announced in January that it would not be renewed, and now Freevee has picked up the drama following its cancellation by Showtime. The show will stream exclusively on Freevee.

Amazon Freevee is bringing back “American Rust” for Season 2 following the show’s cancellation at Showtime.
“American Rust,” based on the Philipp Meyer novel of the same name, stars Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney. The show aired one season on Showtime in late 2021 before it was canceled in January 2022.
“’American Rust’ is exactly the type of gritty and engaging storytelling Amazon Freevee audiences love, and we could not be more excited to bring this prestige series to our customers, free of charge,” said Lauren Anderson and Ryan Pirozzi, co-heads of content and programming at Amazon Freevee. “We can’t wait to dive in with Boat Rocker and Dan Futterman to continue the story that intrigued audiences during the first season, and to see the evolution of characters so expertly portrayed by Jeff and Maura in this next chapter.”

Amazon Freevee has picked up the second season of “American Rust,” the Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney-starring crime series that was previously canceled at Showtime earlier this year.
Based on Philipp Meyer’s acclaimed 2009 novel of the same name, the drama explores the fallout of the “tattered American Dream” in a rustic Pennsylvania town through the lens of the police chief Del Harris. When the son of the woman he loves, Grace Poe (Tierney), is accused of murder, he’s forced to decide how far he’s willing to go in order to protect him.
“I’m grateful to Amazon Freevee for giving us the chance to make Season Two of ‘American Rust,’” Daniels said in a statement. “Set inside a struggling American small town, our authentic, realistically told story is built for streaming. The movies they don’t make anymore are being made as series at places like Amazon Freevee.

Showtime has finalized its plans on how to submit the cast of breakout hit “Yellowjackets” for Emmy consideration — and it comes down to which generation the star is in. Variety has learned exclusively that Showtime plans to submit Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis and Melanie Lynskey in the lead drama actress field. Cypress, Ricci, Lewis and Lynskey portray the adult versions of the girls in the show.
Meanwhile, the actresses that play the teenage versions of their characters — Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher and Samantha Hanratty — will be submitted for supporting actress drama.
The horror drama flashes back and forth between two periods: One, the aftermath of a plane crash, as the members of a high school girls’ soccer team have to fend for themselves; the other, in their adult lives, as they deal with the trauma of that experience.

Two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels stars in the Showtime series “American Rust,” set in a small Rust Belt town in Pennsylvania. He plays a compromised chief of police named Del Harris who is investigating a murder in which the prime suspect is the son of the woman he loves, Grace (Maura Tierney). The series was created by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Dan Futterman and adapted from the novel of the same name by Phillipp Meyer. Daniels signed on to executive produce and star in the series because he could relate to the characters in a small town, much like the one he was raised in Michigan. Watch the exclusive video interview with Daniels above.
“For me it was a complicated story about a small town in the upper Midwest,” Daniels explains. “The people in it were not simple, as is sometimes the case when Hollywood portrays small towns. Everything gets simplified including the characters and the people.

Back in 2009, when Jeff Daniels was starring in “God of Carnage” on Broadway, TV was on the rise. Cable dramas like “Mad Men” were bringing newfound respect to the medium. Stars formerly exclusive to movie screens (like Alec Baldwin on “30 Rock”) were reinvigorating their careers with weekly roles. And Daniels, being a curious thespian who chased good parts whether they’re in movies or at the theater, whether they’re comedies (like “Dumb and Dumber” and “Something Wild”) or dramas (like “The Squid and the Whale” or “Good Night and Good Luck”), he wanted to know how to find those quality gigs on television.
Luckily, he was sharing the stage with an expert.
“[James] Gandolfini was there, god bless him,” Daniels said of his fellow Tony-nominated cast member. “And Jim… I was starting to go, ‘I want to get into TV. I want to chase whatever that is.’ So Gandolfini said,...

The Atlantic Festival, the signature event held each fall in Washington D.C. by The Atlantic, is returning next week as once again a virtual gathering, with a varied lineup that includes former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, writer-producer David Chase and United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby.
The event also is running longer this year, from Sept. 22-24 and Sept. 27-30.
While this year has seen some return to in-person conferences and conventions, the summer uptick in cases due to the Delta variant has scrambled plans of some organizations.
The National Association of Broadcasters this week announced that it was canceling its show, slated for October, that has been one of the larger conventions held in Las Vegas. In D.C., the fall season, typically a prime time for book parties, panels and fundraisers, but organizers have been proceeding cautiously, either going all virtual or a hybrid with proof-of-vaccination or testing as in-person entry requirement.

Chief Del Harris makes a decision on American Rust Season 1 Episode 1 that might be the end of him.
That's a large assumption, but as a man struggling with Ptsd after spending time in the military, Del was already hanging on by a thread.
So many factors are at play here that it seems to be creating a perfect storm, and Chief Del Harris could be its victim.
There aren't many options for advancement or a large dating pool in Buell, but that didn't stop Del from relocating from Pittsburgh to the small, rural rust-belt town.
He's weaning off of his cache of carefully weighed prescriptions meds. He's got his eye on a local, Grace Poe. He might not have known what he was getting into moving to Buell, but he seems to be fitting in pretty well.
But as with many small towns in southwestern Pennsylvania that once relied on the steel industry,...

Near the end of the first episode of “American Rust” — Dan Futterman’s limited series adaptation of Philipp Meyer’s 2009 novel of the same name — Jeff Daniels’ local sheriff tries to explain why he’s gone to bat for a young man accused of assault. You see, Del Harris (an exquisite name for the lead in a modern-day western) is a veteran of the Gulf War, and during the last month of active combat, he was on guard duty when he spotted a man walking too close to the base’s fence. That man was carrying a satchel, which Del feared was a bomb or some other danger to the station he was tasked to protect, so the scared teenage soldier opened fire.
“Next morning, patrol goes out to take a look and there’s hardly anything left — just blood and shredded clothing,” he says. “And no satchel. Did someone come and take it?...

It’s clear from a mile away that American Rust, created by Dan Futterman (The Looming Tower), is meant to be capital-i Important. For starters, there’s the literary pedigree — the Showtime drama is based on Philipp Meyer’s critically acclaimed 2009 novel. And then there’s the respectable cast, which includes Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney and Bill Camp sinking into the kinds of heavy, unglamorous roles that win plaudits.
The plot revolves around an apparent homicide in the depressed Pennsylvania town of Buell (shades of the extremely Emmy-nominated Mare of Easttown) and touches upon a litany of relevant social and political issues ...

There is presumably a point buried amid the infinite frowns and vaguely tortured souls abound in “American Rust,” but like each character’s motivation, it’s undetectable. Showrunner Dan Futterman seems to be marginally curious about the Pennsylvania Rust Belt setting seen in the new Showtime drama, but not enough to build a compelling narrative about it.
Based upon Philipp Meyer’s novel of the same name, “American Rust” can best be described simply as a mood. Not in the same sense of, say, a series that provokes a particular disposition from its audience. Rather, it shows one actual mood throughout the first three episodes made available to press — and relies only on that to keep them invested. But it doesn’t.

Ok. It's time to admit that I am not a critic's critic. I'm a people's critic.
I just want to be entertained, you know? I find so many things enjoyable that are panned by critics. What else can it mean?
When the first episodes of Succession dropped, I loved it. I was enamored. But so many critics panned it that I didn't post an early review because I thought I was so far off the mark. Needless to say, that experience was much different once more episodes were dropped.
Right now, American Rust isn't looking too rosy if you're tracking it on Rotten Tomatoes.
Well, allow me to inch that score up just a fraction because the first three episodes were very good.
I think some of the problems come from a disconnect between city dwellers and the rest of us. Although I live in Pittsburgh and spent decades in Denver,...

If you’re looking for the best Americana drama nowadays, head over to the Pennsylvania rust belt.
After HBO’s 15-Emmy nominated detective series Mare of Easttown, we now have Showtime’s American Rust based on Philipp Meyer’s novel starring 2x Emmy winner Jeff Daniels debuting on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 10Pm Et/Pt.
After starring in such monumental series as HBO’s The Newsroom, Netflix’s Godless and Showtime’s The Comey Rule, Daniels executive produces his first TV series here with American Rust. He nabbed Meyer’s book back in 2005 with his manager Paul Martino, who is also an EP on the Showtime drama series. Like those in Daniels’ canon, his Buell, Pa police chief Del Harris is deep-down a good guy, wanting to do the right thing, but, his conflicts run deep. As a murder occurs in town, and his girlfriend’s (Maura Tierney) son becomes suspect,...

Jeff Daniels, star of Showtime’s upcoming drama American Rust, said his career in television would not have been as prolific if it weren’t for his late God of Carnage co-star James Gandolfini and HBO’s The Sopranos.
“Jim Gandolfini made it happen,” the Emmy-winning actor said about his transition from stage and film to TV. “The Sopranos changed television, as did HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. All of a sudden you have all these other places to go.”
During Showtime’s TCA slot, where Daniels joined fellow American Rust co-stars and the creative team behind the drama, the actor said that premium networks and streamers allowed for more crossover between the mediums – also citing co-star Bill Camp who recently appeared in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.
“I don’t know if Bill or I would get the roles that we would get if it weren’t places like Showtime and others,...

Two acting legends will share the screen on Showtime's American Rust, and it's going to be good.
The premium cabler released the official trailer for its upcoming drama series starring Emmy winner and Tony nominee Jeff Daniels and award-winning actress and Emmy nominee Maura Tierney.
Daniels is on board to executive produce the series, reteaming with Oscar nominee Dan Futterman, who serves as executive producer, writer, and showrunner.
The series is co-produced with Boat Rocker Studios and will premiere on Sunday, September 12 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt.
Based on Philipp Meyer’s celebrated debut novel, American Rust is a compelling family drama and a timeless story of wanting a brighter future while being held prisoner by the past.
The story of survival and transcendence is told through the eyes of Del Harris (Daniels), the complicated and compromised chief of police of a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town full of good people making bad choices.
