This post contains spoilers for "Fallout" season 1, as well as "Justified" and "Justified: City Primeval."
If you watched "Fallout" this weekend and half-expected Deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens himself to stroll across the show's post-apocalyptic wasteland, you're not alone. Despite not actually sharing a casting director with the FX neo-Western "Justified," the first few episodes of the new Prime Video series feature not just one or two but four different actors who previously appeared on the Kentucky-set drama. That's a whole lot of Harlan for one video game adaptation.
Walton Goggins, who stars in "Fallout" as the actor-turned-undead gunslinger known primarily as the Ghoul, is the most obvious connection between the two shows. On "Justified" and its recent follow-up series "Justified: City Primeval," Goggins played smooth-talking man in black Boyd Crowder, who spent most of the original show's six seasons at odds with Timothy Olyphant's lawman. Goggins' "Fallout...

Scott Derrickson is set to direct a new adaptation of Davis Grubb’s classic 1953 crime novel, The Night of the Hunter.
The Night of the Hunter tells the twisted story of Harry Powell, a serial killer who poses as a preacher and marries a widow in order to get his hands on her deceased husband’s hidden fortune. Unfortunately, Powell’s new stepchildren, John and Pearl, grow suspicious and quickly become his targets. The novel was previously adapted in 1955 with Robert Mitchum starring as Powell and delivering one of his very best performances. Although the film is now considered to be one of the best of all time (and one of my personal favourites), it received negative reviews upon its release. Acclaimed actor Charles Laughton made his directorial debut with the film, but he took the failure personally and never directed another movie again.

Dan Wakefield, a prolific author and journalist who made television history when he created and wrote the controversial late-1970s drama James at 15 only to resign when NBC executives bristled over an episode’s depiction of teenage sexuality, died yesterday at a hospice facility in Miami. He was 91, and had been in declining health in recent months.
His death was announced by his attorney, Ken Bennett, to the Indianapolis Star. Wakefield was born and raised in Indianapolis.
In addition to James at 15 and various novels, Wakefield’s credits include the screenplay for the 1997 film Going All The Way, starring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Davies, based on his 1970 novel of the same name. The 1979 divorce drama Starting Over starring Burt Reynolds, Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen, written by James L. Brooks and directed by Alan J. Pakula, was based on Wakefield’s 1973 novel.

People starting the movie Spaceman would be forgiven for thinking that their Netflix had glitched. Yes, we do see Adam Sandler’s character Jakub dressed in a space suit. But he’s not floating through the cosmos. He’s walking through a wooded stream, the greenery of the trees and bushes reflecting off his mask.
What the heck does this have to do with being a space man, one might ask? By the end of the movie, directed by Johan Renck and written by Colby Day (adapting the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař), Spaceman answers all your questions. Or rather, Jakub’s new friend, an alien spider named Hanuš, explains everything in the gentle, dulcet tones of Paul Dano.
Spaceman‘s strange, but ultimately clear, approach may frustrate some viewers. It may excite others, leaving them wanting to watch more sci-fi movies with a surrealist approach. Regardless of...

Director Scott Derrickson’s adaptation of the Joe Hill short story The Black Phone was well-received by critics and the general audience alike. 83% of the reviews listed on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, and more importantly it earned over $161 million at the box office on a budget of just under $20 million. The Black Phone doesn’t lend itself to being sequelized all that well. The story stands on its own and is wrapped up by the time the end credits start rolling… but when something is as successful as this movie was, that opens the sequel door. Indeed, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions has announced that The Black Phone 2 will be released on June 27, 2025 – and the intention is that this sequel will be the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” How is this been possible?

Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Soon after, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson had said he would only return for a sequel if Hawke did as well… and after Hawke was confirmed to be returning, we learned that Derrickson will indeed be directing The Black Phone 2.

Back in 1996, the Twister cast, outside of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was largely unknown. At the time, not too many of them were famous. However, in the years since the film, much of that has changed and much of the Twister cast has gone on to fame both in front and behind the camera.
Helen Hunt was arguably the film’s biggest star in the cast back in ’96, but she wasn’t the first choice for the movie. Before the role of Dr. Jo Harding went to her, Jurassic Park standout Laura Dern, Bridget Fonda, and Kate Mulgrew almost wore the good doctor’s white tank top and reinforced mud-stompers. Initially, Tom Hanks eyed the role of Bill Harding but ultimately felt Twister wasn’t the right fit for his brand of character creation. Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

There's a reason the young adult dystopia fad took off when it did in the 21st century. After a decade that saw the U.S. waging multiple wars overseas and a worldwide financial crisis, stories centering on oppressive, totalitarian governments and socioeconomic inequality very much spoke to the concerns of young people. While Norman Patridge's 2006 novel "Dark Harvest" is a horror-fantasy rather than sci-fi and came out two years before the first "Hunger Games" book, it, too, was clearly informed by what was happening in the 2000s, particularly how the United States' "War on Terror" paralleled its approach to the Cold War and Vietnam back in the 1960s.
By comparison, director David Slade's "Dark Harvest" movie adaptation was late to the party when it finally came together, only to be bounced back multiple times as a result of Covid-19 before quietly being released on digital just in time for the 2023 scary season.

Even though the first film seemed to wrap the tale up — and was, after all, an expanded version of Joe Hill's short story — :a[The Black Phone]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-black-phone/' } is headed down the sequel route with much of the original cast returning to their roles. Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora are all back on board for the new horror, which will once again come from Blumhouse.
Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, who wrote the original (Derrickson also directed), are back on script patrol, though Deadline's report doesn't specify whether Derrickson will once more direct, but it's a fair bet.

The Black Phone 2 is confirmed for release in the summer of 2025, with the original creatives returning for the new film.
Director Scott Derrickson came to box office prominence in particular through his success in horror cinema, with the film Sinister notably. That then got him onto the Marvel payroll, with Doctor Strange, before ultimately declining the opportunity to return for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Sam Raimi took that particular job on instead, to middling results.
Instead, Scott Derrickson focused on making a horror movie, the box office success The Black Phone, that gave a meaty role to Ethan Hawke amongst its many qualities. It’s been known for a little while now that there were plans for a follow up to the movie, and now comes the confirmation of The Black Phone 2.

Somehow, The Grabber returned. Ever since the moment "The Black Phone" landed in theaters and promptly became the latest in a long line of excellent horror movies to overperform at the box office, a sequel to director Scott Derrickson and frequent writing partner C. Robert Cargill's smash hit has felt like a fait accompli. After quite a lot of speculation and even a major public reversal on Derrickson's part, those rumors finally became a reality earlier this year when it was officially confirmed that "The Black Phone 2" was in the works. At the time, it seemed like any potential follow-up would have to adjust the scope of its story, either to focus on surviving characters like Mason Thames' young Finney Blake and his sister Gwen (played by Madeleine McGraw), new protagonists altogether, or (dare I say it) Ethan Hawke's sinister kidnapper and murderer known as The Grabber...

The Black Phone, the horror film based on the short story by Joe Hill, was a huge hit when it was released in 2022. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw, followed the terrifying ordeal of a 13-year-old boy who was kidnapped by a serial killer and trapped in a soundproof basement. There, he received calls from a disconnected phone that connected him to the killer’s previous victims, who helped him plan his escape.

“The Black Phone” is ringing once again at Blumhouse and Universal.
The studio said Friday that “The Black Phone 2” has been dated for June 27, 2025. This takes the place of the previously announced untitled Blumhouse event film for that date.
According to the official release, the news about the sequel “announces the launch of a sinister new franchise.” No information about who is making the sequel (or who is starring in the new film) has been revealed.
“The Black Phone,” produced by Blumhouse, was released by Universal on June 24, 2022. The original film was directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and his frequent partner C. Robert Cargill, based on a 2004 short story by Joe Hill. The movie starred Mason Thames as a young boy abducted by a serial murderer known as The Grabber (a thoroughly evil Ethan Hawke). Plot: A legendary monster called October Boy terrorizes residents in a small Midwestern town when he rises from the cornfields every Halloween with his butcher knife and makes his way toward those who are brave enough to confront him.
Review: I always love a good curse story and when you add in the town sacrifice element I’m even more on board. Dark Harvest deals with a pumpkin monster that comes around every Halloween, that the boys from the town must kill in order to keep the town alive with a bountiful harvest. These boys are from the wrong side of town, so they’re less fortunate and often forced to do it. Whichever boy kills the monster, gets a massive prize and their family is set up well in the community. The concept is interesting and there’s a lot of potential here. Unfortunately, it blunders at nearly every turn.

Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) dishes up a devilishly delicious Halloween treat with MGM’s Dark Harvest. Slade and screenwriter Michael Gilio deliver plenty of gore and gruesome deaths, and the R-rating is not only justified but embraced.
It’s made clear straight away that there’s something wrong with the small town of Bastion, something that only the death of a terrifying creature known as Sawtooth Jack (think Slenderman with a pumpkin head) can fix. However, it’s also clear that killing this supernatural beast isn’t a once-and-done event.
Each Halloween, Sawtooth Jack rises from the cornfields and makes his way into town. If Sawtooth Jack survives and reaches the church before the bell tolls midnight, then the town will be destroyed. If he’s slaughtered – and the candy and treats stuffed inside him...

Norman Partridge’s 2006 Bram Stoker Award-winning novel Dark Harvest introduced a grim Halloween hunt set in a scenic 1963 hamlet. Like a campfire tale, the brisk novel embraced Halloween iconography and small-town rot, told with an almost poetic prose and simplicity befitting of a Twilight Zone episode. Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) and screenwriter Michael Gilio (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) adhere to the novel’s essence, unleashing Halloween carnage that upstages the barebones story.
Dark Harvest reveals the ominous origins of its title straightaway with an introduction to the annual Halloween hunt that takes place in a picturesque but cursed rural town. Every Halloween, the legendary Sawtooth Jack rises from the cornfields, where he must fight through a gauntlet of murderous teen boys, all eager to snuff him out lest he make his way to the town’s church by midnight. A new urban legend comes to life in the new trailer for Dark Harvest. The trailer starts with the ominous, almost Grimm fairy tale-esque narration that says, “It’s Halloween. You know what that means. Old Sawtooth Jack is gonna rise from the cornfields. It’s gotta be stopped. Kill or be killed.” David Slade returns to a grittier tone after the Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night director took on one of the chapters in the Twilight franchise, helming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The director also returns to features after Slade tried his hand at television with Breaking Bad and Black Mirror. He also once set to make a series, Red Bird Lane, with Crispin Glover and Susan Sarandon until Max (HBO Max at the time) opted not to continue with it.

"If you're born in this town, you're cursed." MGM has unveiled an official trailer for a horror movie called Dark Harvest, the latest film project from horror filmmaker David Slade. This was originally set to open in 2022, but was delayed and now the studio is dumping it direct-to-vod to watch at home starting in October during Halloween season. I guess they didn't think a theatrical release is worth it? Adapted from the book of the same name, it's set in a small town where the young men must confront a creature each year in the hopes that they will win a chance to leave. A legendary monster called October Boy terrorizes residents in a small Midwestern town when he rises from the cornfields every Halloween with his butcher knife and makes his way toward those brave enough to confront him. Every year the local boys get ready for the "Run...

Esteemed character actor Mark Margolis passed away this week at the age of 83, leaving behind a long legacy of memorable film and TV characters. Though while you might remember him from "Scarface," "Oz," or "The Wrestler," it's more likely Margolis' face calls to mind one singularly unforgettable role: Hector Salamanca, the ruthless leader of the Salamanca crime family in the "Breaking Bad" universe.
As Hector, Margolis spent most of his time in a wheelchair with an oxygen cannula in his nose, the character communicating only via a small metal bell like the kind you'd find at a hotel front desk. Despite the fact that his performance was largely non-verbal, communicated through flared nostrils and angry, chiming taps, Margolis actually earned an Emmy nod for his turn as the character in 2012. The performer eventually lost the race for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series to "Justified" actor Jeremy Davies, but...

One of the most celebrated movies of 1998 was “Saving Private Ryan,” starring Tom Hanks, Jeremy Davies and Matt Damon. Written by Robert Rodat and directed by Steven Spielberg, the war film tells of a group of U.S. soldiers who are ordered to retrieve a man whose three brothers have all been killed in action. Released 25 years ago on July 24, 1998, “Saving Private Ryan” was a massive commercial success, making $217 million in the United States and $482 million worldwide. The first team-up of Spielberg and Hanks went on to win five Oscars, though infamously not Best Picture. Read on as Gold Derby celebrates the “Saving Private Ryan” 25th anniversary.

Even though "Yellowjackets" fans are always hungry for more, the Showtime series' sophomore season has come to an end. Season 3 has already been confirmed, but it'll be a while before it airs; for what it's worth, the gap between seasons 1 and 2 was 16 months, the former beginning on November 14, 2021, and the latter on March 24, 2023.
Fear not, antler queens, because there's a movie out there perfect to tide you over. "Ravenous," directed by the late Antonia Bird. Released in 1999, the film's genre is just as hard to pin down as that of "Yellowjackets" — "Ravenous" oscillates from horror to bemused comedy, sometimes in the same scene. What the two works do have in common is that they're both stories about people on the edge of civilization, goaded by supernatural forces to devour their fellow man.

“Justified: City Primeval,” the long-awaited spinoff to FX’s Western drama, finally has a premiere date. Ahead of Fox’s upfront, the network announced that “City Primeval” would premiere on July 17. Additionally, FX announced the premiere dates for “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 5, “Reservation Dogs” Season 3 and “Archer” Season 14.
First premiering in 2010, “Justified” quickly became a critical darling. Throughout the series’ run, Walton Goggins’ portrayal of Boyd Crowder was nominated for eight Emmys, and both Margo Martindale and Jeremy Davies won Emmys for their performances. The series followed deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), a tough lawman who administered his own brand of justice throughout Appalachia.

In Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s “Pirate Jenny” from “The Threepenny Opera,” a peasant hotel maid avenges herself for the cruelty she suffers from her fellow townspeople by imagining a pirate ship that sweeps into town, flattening the village and everyone in it. So, of course, the Danish king of saintly put-upon martyrs, Lars von Trier, found this material suitable for making a film every bit as alienating to the audience as the works of Brecht: 2003’s “Dogville.” Von Trier also centered his film around a blockbuster movie star, whose under-a-bell-jar image he set upon to deconstruct: Nicole Kidman.
Freshly off her Best Actress Oscar win for “The Hours” and also out of her messily public but oddly inscrutable divorce from Tom Cruise, Kidman flew to rural Trollhättan in Sweden to get on a soundstage with a truly there-are-no-words-amazing cast: Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Harriet Andersson, Stellan Skarsgård,...

The character The Grabber, played by Ethan Hawke in director Scott Derrickson’s adaptation of the Joe Hill story The Black Phone (watch it Here) is definitely not someone that anybody should emulate… but he did wear a very cool mask, which was designed by legendary special effects artist Tom Savini. The mask is available for pre-order at This Link, and is going for the price of $59.99. Masks are expected to start shipping out on September 13th.

Here's a twist (hey-oh!): Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment's "Twisters" might not be a sequel to "Twister" after all. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming film — which was previously said to be a follow-up to director Jan De Bont's storm-chasing 1996 blockbuster — is now being described by studio executives as "a new chapter." Not only that, it might even be a full-blown reboot of the "Twister" franchise, with the outlet stating, "The new story is not a sequel nor does it plan on bringing back old characters."
"Twister" famously cast Helen Hunt and the late, great Bill Paxton as a pair of married storm chasers on the verge of divorcing when they reunite in the middle of an extreme storm outbreak, in the hopes of deploying their experimental tornado research device. While it was previously believed Hunt might reprise her role as Dr. Jo Harding for "Twisters,...

Tom Sizemore dies aged 61 after brain aneurysm

“Minari” filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung is in talks to direct “Twisters,” the sequel to the 1996 storm-chasing blockbuster starring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
News broke in October that Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment had accelerated development on the project, with Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”) signed on to write the sequel’s screenplay and Frank Marshall (“Jurassic World Dominion”) attached to produce through his Kennedy/Marshall Company. “Twisters” will be co-financed by Warner Bros. The film went on to earn six Academy Award nominations, including for best picture. The idiosyncratic director has one of the more impressively diverse careers, helming everything from documentaries on unusual figures such as the so-called "eco-warrior" Timothy Treadwell in "Grizzly Man" to movies like "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" and everything in between. Somewhere on that continuum sits 2006's "Rescue Dawn," Herzog's dramatization of a documentary he'd produced a decade prior with "Little Dieter Needs to Fly."
The film focuses on the experience of former U.S. Navy pilot Dieter Dengler who was shot down over the Laotian jungle during the Vietnam war. Dengler proceeded to undergo a truly incredible, and highly distressing, experience as a Pow before making his escape, and Herzog obviously couldn't get enough of the tumultuous story, making Dengler the focus of two very different projects. In the case of his movie version, the director needed a...

We all had Covid-19 isolation projects. I learned to cook. Director Mark Pellington, on the other hand, decided to go back and radically recut his first movie, Going All the Way, which starred a young Ben Affleck, Rachel Weisz, Rose McGowan and Jeremy Davies. While enough of an indie hit that it launched Pellington into the big leagues, with his two follow-ups, Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophesies, earning cult status, the first cut of Going All the Way always nagged at Pellington.
Having made its debut at Sundance in 1997, Pellington and the distributor, Grammercy, made a streamlined version of the movie that earned some excellent reviews. However, twenty-five years later, Pellington felt the urge to revisit a film that never really satisfied him. In our exclusive interview, he discusses just how radical of a recut he did. He also discussed reaching out to Affleck, who still has fond memories of the movie,...

In 1997, Mark Pellington made his feature directorial debut with “Going All the Way,” based on Dan Wakefield’s novel of the same name. Telling the story of two Korean War veterans returning to their hometown of Indianapolis in the 1950s, the film featured an impressive cast of then-unknowns — Ben Affleck, Jeremy Davies, Rachel Weisz, Rose McGowan, and Nick Offerman among them. The film screened at Sundance, got solid reviews and a distribution deal… and then disappeared for 25 years. Pellington, while proud of the film, never felt like he quite captured what he had loved about Wakefield’s book, and the various edits the movie went through — from a three-hour-plus rough cut to the 112-minute Sundance version to the 97-minute movie that was ultimately released in theaters — left him feeling like he had taken the guts out of the story.
