There are a plenty of longtime Saturday Night cast members, yet there were no big exits — or hints of departures — on tonight’s Season 49 finale of the venerable NBC late-night program.
No SNL veterans were tearing up at the end of their sketches like Kate McKinnon did in the 2022 finale, it was all smiles and fist bumps at the curtain call, and, after another brutal joke swap, Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped their 10th season together on Weekend Update by wishing everyone a great summer.
This was to be expected, given that no one from this year’s 17-strong troupe would willingly miss next year’s big celebrations – The Big 50.
Host Jake Gyllenhaal set the stage for what is to come in his opening monologue, noting that the finale was “the last episode before the big anniversary season.”

The recent assault on Steve Buscemi on the streets of New York City spawned a skit for SNL that featured Jake Gyllenhaal as an NYPD sergeant urging bad guys to “stop punching character actors in the face.”
Speaking at a press conference for reporters, Gyllenhaal called character actors “the life blood of the entertainment industry” and expressed concern about the assaults on these “national treasures.” He said the attack on Buscemi followed similar ones on Rick Moranis and the “shocking versatile Michael Stuhlbarg.”
He went on to define character actors as “actors who faces you can remember but names you cannot,” including anyone “who has ever been on the TV show Boardwalk Empire, you have a face that makes casting directors go ‘oh interesting,'” and “your IMDb page has over 100 entries, but all your characters just have a first name.”

Gyllenhaal — who was mistakenly referred to as Vaginal Cream — had to navigate through a series of operators who first assumed he just had missing luggage. As soon as they learned he switch flights, he was sent to someone who was even less helpful.

A parody of Scooby Doo turned bloody on SNL Saturday, with host Jake Gyllenhaal subbing in as the toe-headed Fred while musical guest star Sabrina Carpenter guest starred as Daphne.
Dubbed “Scooby Doo and the Mystery of the Shadow Phantom,” the skit featured Fred investigating a haunted mention with Daphne, Velma (Sarah Sherman) and Shaggy (Mikey Day). An animated Scooby Doo helps to catch the phantom they were looking for, who turns out to be James Austin Johnson as Old Man Franklin.
But Fred thinks Old Man Franklin isn’t who he says he is, so he literally pulls off the skin from the face, leaving behind a bloody skull that sends everyone into a screaming frenzy.
Scooby, meanwhile, dives right in and eats the skin.

Coleman and Sheridan’s filmographies show they crossed paths in “Back in the Ring,” a 2003 episode of the CBS drama The Guardian, in which the former starred as Burton Fallin, a lawyer, and the latter guest-starred as Tim Dohanic, boxer whom Burton helps. “I never forgot those lessons, and was humbled myself when he agreed to appear on Yellowstone,” Sheridan added, recalling Coleman’s guest-starring role on the Western series. “His performance was yet another lesson in bravery and emotional honesty. Filming romantic or intimate scenes can be challenging for some actors, a problem often mitigated by the presence of an intimacy coordinator on set. However, it’s a luxury the beloved singer Dolly Parton did not have while filming her debut movie. After making reigns as a singer-songwriter with hits like Jolene and Here You Come Again, Parton embarked on her journey on the silver screen, debuting with the 1980 comedy film 9 to 5.

When a great actor like Dabney Coleman passes away, there is no shortage of platitudes that come from the acting community. There is a shorter list of people who repay their admiration or a good turn, when it really makes a difference. That’s when the actor is still alive. Quentin Tarantino has done it many times, resurrecting careers, and Yellowstone co-creator did it by casting Coleman in a flashback scene with Kevin Costner that is a most fitting epitaph for the actor. His touching turn as John Dutton Sr. was also a pivotal plot point, revealing a promise made by John Dutton (Kevin Costner) that explains why he would not sell off a single square foot of his sprawling Montana ranch. Why did Sheridan choose Coleman? It goes back to when Sheridan was trying to make it as an actor, long before he found his purpose as a prolific storyteller.

If you were a kid growing up in the ’80s, one thing was true. Video games were the spawn of Satan. Okay, we know that isn’t true. But our parents? Adults were terrified of your Atari and your Nintendo, and filmmakers made all sorts of movies that painted games in a negative light. In Wargames a nuclear war was damn near started! While there were plenty of films that understood the imagination and the creative spirit that video games could foster, such as Tron and The Last Starfighter for examples, there’s also a film such as Cloak & Dagger, which goes to some really dark territory to teach a lesson to kids that, honestly, everyone could stand to learn.

Yes, 2023 was a great year for cinema were far scarier than any nights we would spend at Freddy’s. Not even the likes of Vin Diesel driving cars through explosions (again) or Jason Statham punching prehistoric sharks (again) could’ve prepared us for the likes of The Flash shaking our faith in superhero cinema or The Exorcist: Believer shaking our very faith in God… and by God, I mean David Gordon Green’s ability to handle horror. And need I say any more about my previous episode on EXPEND4BLES, the dumbest movie title since FAN4STIC and the dumbest Stallone sequel since Rocky V? But thank God for the likes of Nolan and Scorsese for renewing our faith in the cinematic experience, just as Winnie-the-pooh: Blood And Honey getting a theatrical release was about to have us swearing off the movie gods. And thanks to all you amazing readers...

Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" has always had a terrific cast, but a particular masterstroke of casting came in the show's second season finale, during a flashback in which John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) takes his dying father, John Dutton, Jr., up to the mountains for one last ride. The patriarch is played by the great Dabney Coleman, an actor partially known for playing hard-ass characters in things like "WarGames" and "Cloak and Dagger." We don't see him for long in "Yellowstone," but in his short amount of screen time, he leaves a tremendous impact -- not only in the emotional conversation he has with his son, but his edict to never give up an inch of the Dutton Ranch fuels Costner's character throughout the whole series.

Unlike the anthology series’ fourth iteration, which served as a prequel to its first two, the upcoming fifth batch of episodes will tell an entirely original Midwestern crime story. Leading the season’s star-studded cast is Jon Hamm, who has his sights set on earning his first Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Golden Globe nomination this winter. Since he was already honored in the corresponding drama series category for “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2016, his possible new victory would make him the seventh man to clinch Golden Globes for performances on both continuing and non-continuing TV programs.
Hamm, who picked up four additional Golden Globe bids for “Mad Men” between 2009 and 2013, has already begun his splashy 2023 return to prestige TV by playing a new supporting role on the third season of “The Morning Show.

NBC network dominated the 35th annual Primetime Emmys, with a groundbreaking drama continuing a winning streak, a little-watched sitcom making its name known and another sitcom proving the network might have cancelled it too soon. Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers hosted the event on September 25, 1983. Rivers claimed she had waited nine years for an invitation to the Emmys, and would be wearing every dress she owed (which ended up being nine), and Murphy was excited about his first nomination.
