Oscar-nominated actor John C. Reilly is also known for his prolific stage work, but broke into film with a small role in Brian DePalma‘s “Casualties of War” and carved out a successful career as a young character actor for years after that. He finally came to the public’s attention in a big way as a lovable porn star in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Boogie Nights” (1997). Since then, Reilly has proceeded to steal films in supporting roles and has even headlined more than a few movies himself.
Reilly received an Oscar nomination in Rob Marshall‘s 2002 Best Picture winner “Chicago” for his performance as the schnook of a husband to Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger). In the course of his career, Reilly has earned four Golden Globe nominations and won a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble of “Chicago,” as well as three additional SAG nominations. Hugh Grant’s remarkable ability to walk in the shoes of a hopeless romantic makes the audience swoon with every look and every dialogue that his characters convey. The British star has a lot of these characters in his old Hollywood roster to claim a credible authority over the genre of rom-coms as a whole.
However, it wasn’t until Four Weddings and a Funeral that he became the unofficial face of the charming lover boy that rom-com directors tripped head over heels for. Directed by the esteemed Richard Curtis, the 1994 film established Grant in Hollywood as the British counterpart of Tom Hanks, who was at the time equally famous for his rom-com films.

The recent success of Zendaya’s Challengers has proven people’s interest in the theme of love triangles doesn’t need to be rekindled.
The movies, which explore the romances involving three different personalities, tend to attract the audience with their intricate love lines and unexpected twists, with the final one intended to break the triangle.
Here are 5 of the most remarkable love triangle films, which are available for streaming online.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Where to watch: Prime, Apple TV+

Hugh Grant has been expanding on his career beyond his famous rom-coms, having starred in last year’s special effects-laden big-budget films Wonka and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Grant will be returning to his popular franchise with Renée Zellweger for the recently announced upcoming fourth film in the Bridget Jones movies, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The plot is said to “pick up with Bridget in her early fifties, as she navigates the challenges of modern life while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood.”
Grant recently spoke with the publication People as he teases the next installment in the series. The English actor stated,
It is very moving as well as funny. It’s partly based on Helen Fielding’s experiences of bringing up two children by herself after her husband died. And so Bridget is bringing up two kids and wondering whether she should ever go back to dating.

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson lead the returnees for Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. More here.
The deals look like they’ve been done for the already-announced Bridget Jones 4, which we can now officially call Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy.
As expected, Renee Zellweger is taking on the title role for the fourth time. She’s also going to be joined by Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson, who each return to the series. Grant’s return is a surprise, Thompson’s less so.
And then there are new additions: Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall have now been announced as joining the ensemble.
We also know who’s going to be directing as well: Michael Morris, who previously called the shots on To Leslie, is stepping behind the camera. It’s the first time one of the Bridget Jones movies has been directed by a male director.

Some good news dropped today in the form of a new installment in the beloved Bridget Jones series.
The fourth installment in the series was announced, with Renée Zellweger reprising her iconic role and a few new characters entering the fray just as Bridget enters a new chapter in her life.
With the working title 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,' Bridget, now in her 50s, will be navigating life and love, just as she always has, seemingly with the same charm we've grown accustomed to.
It's thrilling news for fans of both the book series and the movies, who've watched Bridget on the big screen since 2001, when she was in her early twenties, writing away in her diary, scared she'd end up a spinster if she didn't play her cards right.
2001 was a much different time, and that's evident when you go back and watch the first film...

A fourth Bridget Jones movie is on the way! Renée Zellweger will reprise her iconic character in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Additional cast members have been announced, but there’s one major person missing: Colin Firth‘s Mark Darcy. Firth starred in the three previous Bridget Jones installments, so his absence is raising alarm bells. From what the book tells us about Mark Darcy to new cast members to the Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy release date, scroll down to get all the latest details. Is Mark Darcy getting killed off? Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is based off Helen Fielding’s 2013 novel of the same name, the third novel in her Bridget Jones book series. If the film follows the plot of the book, Mark is going to be killed off, which would explain why Firth is not returning. The...

While word on a fourth Bridget Jones has been floating around, today brings the official word that Renée Zellweger has found space in her diary to return as the title character for the fourth film to be drawn from Helen Fielding's stories. Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy will see Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson back, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and One Day's Leo Woodall new to the ensemble.
Michael Morris is in the director's chair this time, with the story finding Bridget navigating motherhood and — spoiler alert! — having to look for love all over again following a tragic death. Yes, this is getting back to counting calories and drink intake while also figuring out nit checks and playdates.
Grant, of course, will be back as the roguish Daniel Cleaver, while Thompson will once more play Dr. Rawlings, who we must assume is still in Bridget's life after delivering her first child.

We mustn’t dwell… no, not today, not on Rex Manning Day. Today marks the 30th anniversary of Rex Manning Day, the fictional day celebrated in the Allan Moyle disaffected teen comedy Empire Records. Rex Manning Day is celebrated to honor the memory and legacy of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who on April 8th was found dead in his Seattle mansion on Lake Washington Boulevard from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after dying on April 5, 1994.
Directed by Allan Moyle, Empire Records takes place over twenty-four hours in the lives of the young employees at Empire Records when they all grow up and become young adults, thanks to each other and the manager. Dripping with attitude, pining, and real-life drama, Empire Records taps into the struggles of a generation by exploring social pressure, the importance of found family, and the power of music as a healing tool. You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

A whopping 26 (or 70.3%) of the last decade’s worth of acting Oscar recipients – including 2024’s Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) – were born in the United States. Also counted here is Joaquin Phoenix, who originates from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Compared to the group of performers who prevailed between 2005 and 2014, the 2015-2024 set includes six more Americans, constituting a 16% larger majority. Considering all 96 years of Academy Awards history, the rate of unique American acting victors stands at 68.1%.

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

Since 1940, the record for highest average screen time between same-year lead acting Oscar winners has been held by Robert Donat and Vivien Leigh (“Gone with the Wind”), whose mean of one hour, 54 minutes, and 43 seconds will likely never be surpassed. Nonetheless, there is a brand new pair in second place, as 2024 Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) came within 10 minutes of dethroning the long-reigning duo. Indeed, both together and separately, their especially lengthy performances inspired several brushes with Oscars screen time history.
Murphy was specifically awarded for one hour, 53 minutes, and 10 seconds of acting work, while Stone clocked in slightly lower at one hour, 37 minutes, and 19 seconds. Understandably, each far outpaced all of their fellow nominees, respectively landing 27 and 22 minutes above their lineups’ averages. Their own average of one hour, 45 minutes, and 15 seconds makes them only the second pair of lead victors to exceed 100 minutes.

The Academy Awards have been handing out a Best Actress trophy since the very first ceremony in 1928. Janet Gaynor for a combo of “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel” and “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” was the first recipient for his leading roles. The most recent champ was Renee Zellweger for “Judy.”
Since then, only one woman has won the category four times: Katharine Hepburn for “Morning Glory,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “The Lion in Winter” and “On Golden Pond.” Next with three is Frances McDormand. The ladies with two lead wins have included Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Jodie Foster, Glenda Jackson, Vivien Leigh, Luise Rainer, Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank. Pageantry. Screw ups. Touching tributes. Private beefs made public. There are plenty of reasons to watch the Oscars. But they all amount to partaking in, witnessing, movie history in its many forms — the high art, the gossip, the record-breaking moments when an arthouse director becomes a household name.
However, there are a lot of ways to set a record. There are big moments like Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King tying the record with 11 trophies or Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite becoming the first film not in English (or silent) to win Best Picture. And then, beyond those sit the oddities and records that are nearly impossible to break. Give me records like Walter Brennan winning three Best Supporting Actor awards because, as a former extra, he was popular with the Union of Film Extras, who were allowed to vote. “Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. This year’s Best Actress Oscar race is perhaps the biggest head-scratcher of all of the main categories, becoming a make-or-break race for the fourth straight year.
It all began when Lily Gladstone surprised pundits with her move up to the lead category for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” then was halted by Emma Stone for “Poor Things” at the Critics Choice Awards (after both won Golden Globes in their respective categories). Stone continued to succeed at the BAFTA Awards after Gladstone was shockingly snubbed. And it seemed that she was on a roll to victory to her second Oscar, only to be stopped in her tracks at the SAG Awards by, you guessed it, Gladstone. This push and pull between the two actresses has created back-and-forth mania over who will ultimately win out, and even though Gladstone has overtaken the lead currently in the combined Gold Derby odds at...

Every year there are many movies that release around the same time of year, close to awards season, all vying to get a coveted nomination. Some of these films are described as “Oscar bait” films, a term used to describe a few different kinds of films that all have one thing in common--their appeal to Oscar voters. These films fall under four categories: the historical drama, the musician biopic, the melodrama, and the quirky indie comedy.

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

Hollywood heartthrob Bradley Cooper is currently dating Gigi Hadid. Despite being linked to many women, 2011’s People magazine‘s Sexiest Man Alive insists he’s far from being a ladies’ man. The actor first got married to actress Jennifer Esposito in 2006. But their romance didn’t last long and they divorced four months later.
Cooper then went on to date Renée Zellweger, his co-star Zoe Saldaña, model-actress Suki Waterhouse, and Russian supermodel Irina Shayk, with whom he has a daughter named Lea de Seine.
Since parting ways with Shayk in 2019, the Maestro star has reportedly been seeing Huma Abedin. While Cooper has been often linked to high-profile celebrities, he’s especially grateful for the daughter he shares with one of his previous partners.

Bridget Jones is back for a fourth film, and filming will be getting underway in the spring. Renee Zellweger leads the returning cast.
Helen Fielding’s big knicker wearing, perennial singleton Bridget Jones has headlined three feature films so far – 2001’s Bridget Jones’ Diary, 2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and 2016’s Bridget Jones’ Baby.
The first film followed Bridget as she struck up a relationship with the smarmy, charming Daniel Cleaver, played by Hugh Grant, not realising that her perfect match is Mark Darcy. Darcy of course was played, in an inspired piece of casting, by Colin Firth – the pathetic fist fights between the two men stand as highlights of both films.
The second sees Bridget once again taken in by Cleaver’ charms in Thailand, before she ends up in prison. The third film sees Bridget end up pregnant, unsure whether Darcy or Patrick Dempsey’s Jack is the father.

For the fourth consecutive year, we’ve got a firecracker of a Best Actress Oscar race. Lily Gladstone took home the Screen Actors Guild Award on Saturday for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone, who had been on a roll since the two won their respective Golden Globes, having pocketed the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards for “Poor Things.” Now they each have an industry prize and Best Actress feels like a coin-flip. Gladstone has closed the gap on Stone in the Oscar odds since Saturday. Don’t be surprised if she overtakes the top spot soon. But when the SAG Awards and BAFTAs don’t align in Best Actress, which one has the edge at the Oscars?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 23 years ago, the Brits and the actors guilds have disagreed 13 times in the category prior to the Battle of the Stones. But not all splits are created equally.

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...
