“Screen Talk: went live at the American Pavilion in Cannes this year and drew a lively crowd. Anne Thompson raved about one of the big-epic Hollywood titles playing out of competition, George Miller’s prequel “Furiosa” (Warner Bros.), starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role, which opens May 14, while both Thompson and cohost Ryan Lattanzio panned Kevin Costner’s old-fashioned three-hour Western “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One” (Warner Bros.).
They both agree that this vanity project makes mad genius Francis Coppola’s self-funded $120 million “Megalopolis” look brilliant by comparison. Even if the Competition title is “unhinged,” at least he’s treading new ground, unlike Costner, who has spent some $100 million so far for the first two chapters of a planned four (the second part releases August 16). Coppola still awaits a North American buyer.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone has been making headlines since its release in 2018. The show has garnered a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim for its storytelling and characters, apart from praise for a range of other elements. However, Sheridan’s involvement in the show has hugely contributed to its massive success, spawning an entire franchise.

While the show continues to capture the public’s interest as it approaches its end, it reportedly imposed a significant financial burden on the network. An old report suggested that the big budget was allegedly attributed to Sheridan’s absurdly enormous paychecks.

Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 is one of the most popular Western prequel series and a fitting series that takes place before the events of Yellowstone. The prequel stories told the story of why the Dutton family decided to settle in Montana. The series features Tim McGraw and Faith Hill in the roles of James Dutton and Margaret Dutton in the lead role, and they travel from Tennessee to Fort Worth, Texas to start a new life.

The TV Series features a star-studded cast in its first season, but shooting the series has been a task in itself. Sam Elliot, who portrays the role of Shea Brennan, shared how Taylor Sheridan made his life hell, as he shared his primary concern when he first read the script of the prequel series.

Few types of movies sum up the 1990s quite like “dad thrillers.” A term popularized by the brilliant Max Read a few years ago, the dad thriller is a subgenre of thriller movies that was largely designed to appeal to older male viewers or otherwise featured thematic elements associated with that demographic. Yes, such movies often feature men being really good dads, but it’s about more than that. Dad thrillers were often closer to ’70s paranoia thrillers like Three Days of the Condor, which pitted crusaders of truth against staggering odds in a slow-burn narrative. They typically featured lawyers, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and dads in other thoroughly professional fields who were very good at their jobs. Many were based on books or otherwise inspired by the fictional and non-fictional texts dads of that generation loved to read. Some were theatrical hits but most of them found a home in living rooms everywhere.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are unforgettable actors. And even early in their careers, they stood out in a sea of extras, according to Kevin Costner.
In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Costner recalled his memories of the young stars working on Field of Dreams.
“They were sitting in the stands, like college guys, and they came up, and they both leaned in at the same time, leaned back at the same time, looked at each other at the same time as we talked,” he says. “And they had this big enthusiasm. They were on fire. I do remember them, absolutely.”
Jimmy Kimmel then read a text message from Damon, who recalled the moment from his perspective.
“I remember it well,” the text said. “I literally had an Untouchables poster on my wall. He came out and hung around with the extras between setups. I asked him what he was doing,...

Few periods on the calendar mean more to cinephiles than the two weekends in May occupied by the Cannes Film Festival. Since its founding in 1946, the French festival has been a launchpad for some of the most artistically significant films of all time. The Palme d’Or is one of the most coveted film awards on the planet, and the festival’s ability to balance subversive arthouse work with major Hollywood premieres has led many to view it as the world’s most significant celebration of cinema.
The 2024 lineup featured a mix of buzzy premieres from New Hollywood titans like Francis Ford Coppola and Paul Schrader alongside exciting new works from emerging directors. Between the Main Competition, Un Certain Regard, special screenings, and sidebars like the Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week, the onslaught of new films can be overwhelming for anyone who isn’t able to give the festival their 24/7 attention.

Michael Richards became well-known across the globe thanks to his role on Seinfeld where he played Cosmo Kramer. He also worked as a standup comedian but put a pause on that before returning to the stage later. However, things didn’t work out well for him. In 2006, he got himself into a horrible mess after he was filmed abusing his Black audience members and hurling racial slurs at them.

At a stand-up show in Los Angeles, Michael Richards was heckled by a group of Black men sitting in the audience and as a response, the comedian berated the men, which obviously did not end well for him. After the video went viral, he found himself on the receiving end of backlash which caused him to retire from stand-up comedy. Recently, the actor opened up about the incident, once again.

Kevin Costner has been connected to a lot of projects throughout his tenure as an actor, with one of his most remarkable performances being that of John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone lore. This is why, when fans found out the saga was going to get cut short because he was leaving to helm his own Horizon saga, they were nothing short of devastated.

That being mentioned, there has been a lot of controversy about how Costner was going to leave the lore and what was to happen to his character. And, the most recent solution to this problem, shared by the John Dutton portrayer himself, is a completely different one than the ones told before and is one that might as well end up upsetting the Western’s fans.

Even the best TV show can be completely ruined by behind-the-scenes drama, and Yellowstone fans know this firsthand. Even as the entire world of Taylor Sheridan fans tried to understand what exactly ended the relationship between him and his star, Kevin Costner, the more information that came out, the more confusing it became.
With both sides pointing fingers and trying to absolve themselves of any blame, the only thing Yellowstone fans know is that their favorite show is now ending in a shambles. Even worse, Dutton family patriarch John will likely meet his demise right on their screens. At least, that's the fate Kevin Costner has chosen for his character.
Why Did Kevin Costner Leave Yellowstone?
The western star's departure came as no surprise. Although it was first reported that he was dropping Yellowstone in favor of working on his own western trilogy, Horizon, that was only part of the truth.

Taraji P. Henson has been one of the most vocal actresses in Hollywood at the moment. The Hidden Figures star gained recognition for her role in Hustle & Flow, and David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Henson recently opened up about many of the issues she faced while filming the musical adaptation of The Color Purple. The novel by Alice Walker was first adapted by Steven Spielberg, which has since gained many criticisms for its portrayal of Black people. At this month’s Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner each unveiled passion projects they opted to finance themselves after institutional backers initially passed. This week, three auteurs make a trend — except instead of putting his own funds toward a deeply personal, sweeping epic, comedian Shane Gillis has made a lewd, bro-y workplace comedy set at a Pennsylvania tire shop.
Since getting fired from “Saturday Night Live” — before he’d even started — for offensive jokes on his podcast, Gillis has become the poster child for a decentralized, grassroots attention economy that allows some entertainers to build thriving careers without gatekeepers’ blessings. His 2021 special “Live in Austin” blew up on YouTube; the same podcast that cost him “SNL,” co-hosted with fellow comic Matt McCusker, continues apace; Gillis even self-produced his own sketch comedy series, “Gilly and Keeves,” which culminated with a feature-length special last year. Unlike the big screen adaptation of Lee Child’s acclaimed novel, which saw Tom Cruise playing the titular character, the Amazon adaptation found a book-accurate actor for the series. Considering Jack Reacher’s 6.5 ft height is one of his most recognizable features from the books, Alan Ritchson, who stands at 6.3 ft, successfully embodied the intimidating nature of the character.
But despite being huge in size, in the upcoming season, it seems Jack Reacher is finally set to be humbled by Olivier Richters, who perfectly embodies Lee Child’s idea of Paulie in the books.

Ever since Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner had their little falling out, the greatest mystery of Yellowstone became its finale — particularly, its cast and/or ability to have a decent closure for the patriarch of the Dutton family. There’s little to no opportunity to do so without former lead star Kevin Costner, so fans have been worried lately.
Recently, Costner made a few hopeful statements, giving fans the idea that he might still return — but the latest update seemingly puts a lid on such aspirations.
Yellowstone S5 Part 2 Is Already Filming
On May 20, Paramount announced that Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 was officially in production. The script has been finalized, the crew’s all gathered, and the cameras are rolling. While spectacular news for fans in the sense that there’s been quite a delay since the first part of S5 premiered, it also spells trouble for Costner’s return.

Kevin Costner is feeling so blessed for the love he received at Cannes for his passion project “Horizon,” which took him so many years to get off the ground – 35 years to be exact. So we can understand why the ‘Yellowstone’ star was teary-eyed during the beautiful moment.
To make the moment even more beautiful, he attended the premiere event with five of his seven children: Annie, 40, Lily, 37, Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 13.

Kevin Costner, the guest on this year’s Cannes Film Festival live episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most admired actors and filmmakers of his time, and has been for some 40 years, with credits to his name including The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, JFK, The Bodyguard, Hatfiels & McCoys and Yellowstone.
This week, the two-time Oscar winner, 69, came to Cannes to premiere the first installment of what is arguably his most ambitious project yet: Horizon, a four-film Western epic that he co-wrote, produced, directed, stars in and largely self-financed — indeed, he contributed $38 million of the $100 million total budget. Clint Eastwood is one of the leading pioneers of actors and filmmakers who popularized the Western genre and elevated it during his prime. The actor’s collaborations with Sergio Leone on the Dollars trilogy changed Westerns forever. Eastwood carried on the legacy of those who came before him and elevated the genre by taking it into unexplored territory with many of his Westerns.

The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider, and Unforgiven were four of the Westerns masterpieces Eastwood made. While the genre has not had the level of popularity it did back then, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone reinvigorated the genre with a fresh and intimate familial story. While Sheridan certainly took inspiration from Eastwood, he did not want to copy one trait of his films.

The devil was in the detail when it came to 1987’s superb The Untouchables – and that included the suite where Robert De Niro’s Al Capone lived.
With a price tag of $25m in an era when that felt like a reasonable amount of money for a major Hollywood studio to spend, Paramount Pictures’ 1987 hit The Untouchables was really something of a gamble.
>Granted, it was a gamble mitigated by the presence of some star wattage. Still, Robert De Niro in the role of Al Capone was a man more known for attracting strong critical notices than packing the house out. Sean Connery meanwhile was far from at the height of his commercial pulling powers.

Paolo Sorrentino has done a wide range of films but until his most personal, The Hand of God two years ago (a prize winner in Venice), he had not returned to Naples, the land of his youth, except for the very first feature he made, 2001’s One Man Up. Since then though, he has been to Cannes with his films six times, and his impressive list of movies have included The Consequences of Love, Il Divo, Loro and his Oscar-winning The Great Beauty. There have been more mixed reactions for his starry English-language films like Youth and This Must Be the Place, but Italy seems to drive his creative mojo and may be closest to his heart in the current phase of his filmmaking career when he has found new inspiration by going back to his youth, first in Hand of God which closely reflected his own coming of age in Naples,...

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is officially out. The movie he’d risked so much for, his dream project that the actor was cooking for many years, trying to get the funding for it… In the end, Costner took a massive gamble and poured tens of millions of his own money into making Horizon — but we severely underestimated just how much money it was.
Kevin Costner Spent a Fortune on Horizon
There are two major ways in which Costner took immense risks to make Horizon come true. The first one is, of course, his career: the Western star lost his lead part in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone to work on Horizon and likely rejected some other offers to make time for his own project. But that’s not even the main thing.
For many years, Costner was failing to find production companies willing to fund Horizon.

Talking to Kevin Costner after the Cannes premiere of “Horizon: An American Saga,” IndieWire’s Anne Thompson asked the filmmaker if he thought he could improve on Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone.” Costner starred as John Dutton for five seasons; he is unmentioned in the press release for the sixth, which just began production.
“No, of course not,” he said.
However, Costner noted, it could be the other way around: During the second season of “Yellowstone” in 2019, he said, Sheridan was looking for writers. He and Baird sent him the “Horizon” script. Thompson noted that both “1883” and “Horizon” share a wagon train story.
“So I don’t know if there’s any duplications there,” Costner said. “Whether he borrowed something, only he’d have to admit to.” (Reps for Sheridan did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)
Vague accusations of “borrowing” aren’t new to “Yellowstone.” It’s a popular topic on fan sites,...

This year will mark the end of ‘Yellowstone,’ even though seasons 6 and 7 were originally planned for it. However, despair not, even though creator Taylor Sheridan says the ending was rushed, he did confirm that he was still able to wrap it up the way it would have been done even if there were subsequent seasons.
Prior to Kevin Costner exiting the series to work on his own Western drama ‘Horizon,’ the show’s first four and a half seasons have revolved around the Dutton family, with patriarch Costner’s John Dutton at the helm. However, Costner has agreed to return to wrap up the series. But what kind of ending will it now get?

The Yellowstone drama has been a serious part of the modern popular culture that has filtered out of the lives of the cast, crew, and director and into that of the audience. For more than a year now, Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan have nipped at each otherʼs heels trying to resolve the issue via compromise, but while misconceptions have muddied the water for the viewers, the relationship between the showʼs director and his lead remains very much the same.

So this is what economizing looks like in Cannes.
The rosé still flowed, though not as freely, and it was easier to get a reservation at the Michelin-starred restaurants that are usually booked months in advance of the film festival. There were still rooms to be had at the Hôtel du Cap, the posh resort where studio chiefs and movie stars typically stay. Most troubling, the deals — both for completed films that premiered in Cannes and the packages that hit the Côte d’Azur searching for financing — are taking much longer to close.
Even in the shimmering south of France there’s no escaping that the movie business, having endured Covid shutdowns and two devastating labor strikes, has lost much of its luster. Donna Langley, the chairman of NBCUniversal Studio Group, was blunt during a talk, noting that the domestic box office is down 20% and the global box office has...

Kevin Costner was at the top of his career back in 1992, having climbed the ladder of success with his critically acclaimed Dances with Wolves. Meanwhile, pop star Whitney Houston was busy making her way to the top with her magical voice and electric personality. And in true Hollywood fashion, despite orbiting in their own spheres, Costner and Whitney came together in the 1990s to create an iconic masterpiece that still resonates with the audience, The Bodyguard.

Yellowstone has been the heart of Western television for a long time now. The way it managed to switch things up for the genre was extraordinary, with Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan at the center of it all. Everyone who worked on the show had a lot to say about it, much of it being positive. Fans and critics alike had a boatload of praise for the series as well.

Sean Baker returned to the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday with Anora, his New York-set romantic dramedy about a stripper from Brooklyn who transforms into a modern Cinderella when she meets the son of a Russian oligarch.
The film, playing in the official competition three years after Baker’s success in Cannes with the Simon Rex-starring Red Rocket, scored an 10-minute ovation after the mid-afternoon world premiere screening wrapped at the Palais de Festivals.
The pic centers on Anora, who meets, falls in love with and marries the son of a Russian oligarch. Complications most certainly arise when his parents find out and try to get the marriage annulled.

Sean Baker’s previous film, 2022’s Red Rocket (2022), began with *Nsync’s Spotify-topping “Bye Bye Bye,” but Anora starts with the slightly lesser-known “Greatest Days” by British boy band Take That. Musically, it’s a bold choice, at odds with the frenetic spirit of what for over half its running time is a high-decibel screwball comedy that spends a lot of time in its establishing scenes in New York strip joints.
The tentative nature of the lyric however — “This could be the greatest day of our lives” — is slyly indicative of where this modern Cinderella story is going, a film of three parts that accelerates at speed, cruises at high altitude for a surprisingly long time, then comes back down to earth with a deeply affecting and almost unbearably melancholy coda that sends the audience out in silence.

Just yesterday, we reported how Kevin Costner is struggling to find someone who will help him finance the third and fourth parts of his planned Western epic – Horizon. Costner is an acclaimed filmmaker and Oscar winner who has left us with many memorable roles, but the guy likes the Western genre, both as an actor and as a director. After the success of Yellowstone, Costner embarked on an epic journey to explain how the Americans colonized the West, planning to make a four-part movie epic. The first two parts will be released in cinemas this year, with the first film premiering in Cannes only recently.
Costner has invested a lot of his own money into financing the projects and is now looking for studios who are willing to give money to him to finish the project. But, based on the first critics’ reviews, Costner won’t have much luck in his endeavor,...

Kevin Costner feels Francis Ford Coppola’s pain. Both invested their own millions — “just shy of $100 million” for Costner, he told me, and $120 million for Coppola — in ambitious movies that no one else wanted to fund.
“Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” (which debuted out-of-competition at Cannes on May 19 to the extended standing ovation that is de rigueur these days) landed New Line/Warner Bros. as its stateside theatrical distributor in what Costner said was a “very modest” deal. He added that “Horizon” sold well to foreign territories at Cannes via K5, although it was slow going at first.
Coppola is still hoping someone will pay him to release his film. Costner is concerned that the auteur is vulnerable. “There’s people that will take advantage of you and I fear people will do that to Francis,” he said. “I’m worried about him, too. I feel they will do that to him.

The Western drama is still scheduled to return with its last episodes in November of this year.
There’s been so much off-camera drama surrounding “Yellowstone” that fans of the show can be forgiven for thinking that some of its characters have leaped off the screen and into real life. The rugged Western series following the triumphs, failures, and betrayals of the Dutton family hasn’t aired a new episode since January 1, 2023, and its co-creator Taylor Sheridan has decided to nix the planned final two seasons of the show and end it after its current fifth installment. Now, Paramount has announced that production on the long-awaited second half of Season 5 has finally begun, which means that fans can officially start getting excited about the return of new episodes to Paramount Network this November.

For the first part of Horizon: An American Saga he has mortgaged his four properties to raise the funds which has enabled him to also complete Chapter Two of the epic Western.

The fifth season of Yellowstone is halfway done, so the show is not over yet. As the hit series draws closer to its anticipated finale, fans are eager to see how the story of the Dutton family is going to end. However, one key player in the show’s success, Kevin Costner, has thrown a wrench in the works by hinting that he may not return for the final episodes unless certain “conditions” are met.
Since reports of Costner’s departure from Paramount’s show began to circulate in 2023, his controversial exit has been linked to schedule conflicts, financial demands, and a shift in focus toward other projects. But, in a recent interview for a GQ cover story, the 69-year-old actor offered his perspective on the situation and discussed his potential return to Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner arrived at the Cannes Film Festival surrounded by his children on Sunday night for the premiere of his new film Horizon: An American Saga. The appearance marked a rare reunion of the entire Costner family on the international stage, showcasing the close-knit bonds that have defined this Hollywood dynasty.
The Costner family looked elegant together as they walked the red carpet. Kevin, known for iconic movies like Dances with Wolves and Field of Dreams, led the way with his engaging presence.
His daughters Lily, Grace Avery and Annie looked beautiful in their dresses, and his sons Cayden Wyatt and Hayes looked dashing in their suits.
The family reunion on the French Riviera showed how close the Costners are, even though Kevin divorced his wife, Nicole Baumgartner, last year in an acrimonious divorce. He has worked hard to maintain strong bonds with all his children from his previous marriages.
