- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsCillian MurphyEmily BluntMatt DamonThe story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.Nolan delivers his best film since Inception with powerful performances, excellent VFX and beautiful music. The fastest 3 hours of my life.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsEmma StoneMark RuffaloWillem DafoeAn account of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.Combining great drama and comedy with great performances and production, this film is a wonderfully weird time from start to finish.
- DirectorJustine TrietStarsSandra HüllerSwann ArlaudMilo Machado-GranerA woman is suspected of murder after her husband's death; their half-blind son faces a moral dilemma as the main witness.Great court drama, great acting and excellent script. What more could you want?
- DirectorJoaquim Dos SantosKemp PowersJustin K. ThompsonStarsShameik MooreHailee SteinfeldBrian Tyree HenryMiles Morales catapults across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero.A towering achievement of animation with great character work and action. Pretty much a perfect film if not for its lack of a proper ending.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsPaul GiamattiDa'Vine Joy RandolphDominic SessaA cranky history teacher at a prep school is forced to remain on campus over the holidays with a grieving cook and a troubled student who has no place to go.A great feel-good film with great performances. It’s destined to become a Christmas classic.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseHayley AtwellVing RhamesEthan Hunt and his IMF team must track down a dangerous weapon before it falls into the wrong hands.Tom Cruise once again delivers brilliant action and fun espionage in another solid entry in this franchise. While it lacks the tight plotting of its predecessor, it is still a lot of fun.
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsMargot RobbieRyan GoslingIssa RaeBarbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.A film that’s fun all around, even if it’s message is somewhat muddled. The performances and visuals are fantastic but the standout is definitely Ken.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioRobert De NiroLily GladstoneWhen oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one - until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery. While it’s certainly my least favourite Scorsese film, this well-shot, excellently acted and powerfully told story shows why Scorsese is still one of the best in the business even if this film overstays its welcome.
- DirectorChad StahelskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneGeorge GeorgiouJohn Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.An absolute nonsensical plot is balanced out by some of the best action ever put to screen. A worthy end for John Wick.
- DirectorJonathan GlazerStarsChristian FriedelSandra HüllerJohann KarthausAuschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden beside the camp.A film that may not be that engaging or enjoyable, but it’s a well made film with impeccable sound design that delivers a unique and haunting perspective on the holocaust.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMichael FassbenderTilda SwintonCharles ParnellAfter a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn't personal. An interesting take on assassins. Well-directed, well-shot and well-written with a good blend of serious and comedic, though I can definitely understand if one may find it underwhelming.
- DirectorJeff RoweKyler SpearsStarsMicah AbbeyShamon Brown Jr.Nicolas CantuThe Turtle brothers work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.Great animation and fun protagonists make this a surprisingly fun time even if the plot is basic.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattChukwudi IwujiBradley CooperStill reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own - a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful. My least favourite Guardians movie, lacking the slick efficiency of it’s predecessors. Too many characters, so many bad unfunny jokes but it’s carried by Rocket’s story and some great action.
- DirectorJohn Francis DaleyJonathan GoldsteinStarsChris PineMichelle RodriguezRegé-Jean PageA charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.Just a whole bunch of fun. Story is serviceable and some of the effects look dodgy, but the characters are all likeable and the some of the comedy is superb.
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsJohn David WashingtonMadeleine Yuna VoylesGemma ChanAgainst the backdrop of a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon, a robot in the form of a young child.A personal disappointment. This film lacks the time to tackle its themes and ideas and the third act sucks, but the acting, action and VFX make it worth at least one watch.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsAdam DriverShailene WoodleyGiuseppe FestineseSet in the summer of 1957, with Enzo Ferrari's auto empire in crisis, the ex-racer turned entrepreneur pushes himself and his drivers to the edge as they launch into the Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy.Personally I didn’t enjoy it too much. Adam Driver was serviceable, Penelope Cruz was great and the racing was good but the film failed to make me feel invested in Enzo Ferrari’s story.
- DirectorAaron HorvathMichael JelenicPierre LeducStarsChris PrattAnya Taylor-JoyCharlie DayA plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother Luigi, trying to save a captured princess.Objectively, it isn’t great but the animation and references hold it together. It looks great, the action is great but it’s held back by some annoying illumination elements.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsEzra MillerMichael KeatonSasha CalleBarry Allen uses his super speed to change the past, but his attempt to save his family creates a world without super heroes, forcing him to race for his life in order to save the future.A lot of good ideas, messy execution. Good performances matched by bad ones. Cool concepts brought down by atrocious CGI. The film is fun, but it isn’t anything special.
- DirectorSteven Caple Jr.StarsAnthony RamosDominique FishbackLuna Lauren VelezDuring the '90s, a new faction of Transformers - the Maximals - join the Autobots as allies in the battle for Earth.A somewhat fun but forgettable film. It lacks the over the top spectacle of Bayformers and overall feels too safe and sterile for a transformers movie. Humans were good though.
- DirectorEmma TammiStarsJosh HutchersonPiper RubioElizabeth LailA troubled security guard begins working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. During his first night on the job, he realizes that the night shift won't be so easy to get through. Pretty soon he will unveil what actually happened at Freddy's.A horror movie lacking scares and violence that feels to hesitant to take advantage of the rich lore of the games to tell the best story it could possibly tell.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHarrison FordPhoebe Waller-BridgeAntonio BanderasArchaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary artifact that can change the course of history.Another unnecessary, soulless cash grab sequel with an aging Harrison Ford barely holding it together. A massive step down from its predecessors and immensely boring.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsSofia BoutellaDjimon HounsouEd SkreinWhen a peaceful settlement on the edge of a distant moon finds itself threatened by a tyrannical ruling force, a stranger living among its villagers becomes their best hope for survival.A miserable, derivative and boring affair. Nothing here is memorable or interesting and it is easily one of the worst of the year.
