- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsBibi AnderssonLiv UllmannMargaretha KrookA nurse is put in charge of a mute actress and finds that their personae are melding together.I have never been so disturbingly moved by a film and I think it about it way too often. As if someone took my mind and pastered it all over a screen. I genuinely love every part of this movie.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsBrad PittDiane KrugerEli RothIn Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.Perfect in every way. The climax of this movie may be better than an orgasm. Well, at least some orgasms. Mélanie Laurent as Shosanna manages to outshine Christoph Waltz as the ever iconic Hans Landa, and that really says something.
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.PERFECT (!!) illustration of loneliness and the modern complications of long distance love. And the cinematography is nothing less than absolutely beautiful.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack. The purest form of filmmaking. Rarely can you see how much fun EVERYONE involved in one and the same movie has had. Which means you have equally fun with them. And I love corny splatter flicks from the 80's, and Evil Dead constitutes that epitome.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.OBVIOUSLY
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsUma ThurmanDavid CarradineDaryl HannahAfter awakening from a four-year coma, a former assassin wreaks vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her.OBVIOUSLY 2.0
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsHarvey KeitelTim RothMichael MadsenWhen a simple jewelry heist goes horribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.Introduction to the moviemaster. As if Tarantino has read Bordwell and Thompson's Introduction to Film Art, front to back. Perfect filmmaking in all categories.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.Sigourney Weaver runs around with a flamethrower and a cat and kills giant monster. And outlives misogynistic men. PERFECT MOVIE
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsNaomi WattsLaura HarringJustin TherouxAfter a car wreck on Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesiac, she and a Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality.I love David Lynch. This is his best work. Ergo;
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonCiarán HindsAfter a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.Criminally underrated movie. One of the funniest comedies there is with some of the darkest and most cynical moments in cinema. In Bruges shows a level of depth and sympathy for its characters that few movies seems to reach. There are moments that drag, but they are made up for so beautifully by moments that show criminal people facing up to their crimes, more tragically done than in most of cinema.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostKate AshfieldThe uneventful, aimless lives of a London electronics salesman and his layabout roommate are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse.A film that is made with such pure love for filmmaking, which surges through every shot. Whilst being intensely funny the movie also manages to be really moving and sad at times, without feeling false.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.(the whole trilogy). OBVIOUSLY 3.0
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJohn CusackCameron DiazCatherine KeenerA puppeteer discovers a portal that leads literally into the head of movie star John Malkovich. This thing is so OUT THERE it's hard to not adore. And few performances have ever been so flawless as the ones by John Malkovich.
- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsVictor SjöströmBibi AnderssonIngrid ThulinAfter living a life marked by coldness, an aging professor is forced to confront the emptiness of his existence.Victor Sjöström. Ingmar Bergman. Surrealist dream sequences. Lunds Domkyrka. Questioning the human condition and our existence. What more can you want?
- DirectorJean-Pierre JeunetStarsAudrey TautouMathieu KassovitzRufusDespite being caught in her imaginative world, Amelie, a young waitress, decides to help people find happiness. Her quest to spread joy leads her on a journey where she finds true love.Cutest little feel-good movie there is.
- DirectorHenry SelickStarsDanny ElfmanChris SarandonCatherine O'HaraJack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.Beautiful, creative, heart-warming, funny and a wonderful classic. EVERYONE HAIL TO THE PUMPKIN KING
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future. My love for this movie can be described with three words; HORROR + RUSSIAN MONTAGE! Long, slow-paced without a lot of action, but yet I want to watch it again and again and again, and cry over the fact that I will probably never be as skilled as Kubrick.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.This one is slow-paced, doesn't really make a lot of sense and is really hard to grasp. But my god, I've never seen a more beautiful and haunting movie. I cannot for the life of my understand how it was made in 1968, as it has better and more beautiful cinematography and effects than anything created in the modern day. It's absolutely grand and terrifying. Again; allow me to cry.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.I was so surprised and blown away by The Thing and the extent to which it was creative with its body horror. I despise modern gore, because of how much it focuses on pain and misery, but this movie is such a WILD RIDE! Breathtaking from start to finish and never fails to give you a big surprise, a big scare and also most likely, a big laugh.
- DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.I CRIED DURING THE ENTIRE MOVIE. I CAN'T WRITE MORE THAN THAT OR I'LL START SOBBING AGAIN. But it's a good sobbing. The best kind. See it.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsMichael J. FoxChristopher LloydLea ThompsonMarty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.Main movie of my childhood. Could watch this any day. Such feelgood and surprisingly it never gets less exciting.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.I absolutely love Damien Chazelle and I can't really decide whether to put this one here or Whiplash. They're both radically different movies but I admire them on the same level. However La La Land wins a place on this list as it is so wonderful and beautiful and has the BEST songs I've heard in a musical.
- DirectorRichard CurtisStarsDomhnall GleesonRachel McAdamsBill NighyAt the age of 21, Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend turns out not to be as easy as you might think.A common theme in this list is films that have profound metaphorical language or high-art semantics. About Time definitely doesn't belong to that category. It's cheesy and clichéed and all in all a simple little movie, but I'll be god damned if this movie doesn't make me SO happy. Sometimes that's all it takes.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences. After I saw Hereditary I couldn't think about anything else for a week or two. I'm obsessed. Hereditary works on so many levels and is an incredibly gutwrenching story about family trauma passed on through generations. You want to think you'll never do the same to your children that which you've been put through, but this movie suggests it's in your bloodline and will never stop. The emotional punches are effective throughout and will leave you with images (and sounds) you will NEVER forget.
- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsBertil GuvePernilla AllwinKristina AdolphsonTwo young Swedish children in the 1900s experience the many comedies and tragedies of their lively and affectionate theatrical family, the Ekdahls.I've written an in-depth review on Fanny and Alexander on the user reviews, but all-in-all: masterpiece. I can't think of a better movie in terms of execution. It's perfect. It makes me a little angry. I can't think of a single thing that would improve this movie.
