Landscape and Cinematography - My Favourites
I just love it when directors and cinematographers focus their efforts on portraying landscape as an element of beauty in their films, when they treat the celluloid like impressionist artists treat their canvas. The combination of light, nature and countryside can be used to great cinematic effect that can be quite exhilarating for nature lovers like me.
I'm not talking about cute animals on screen, nor the Jungfrau in The Sound of Music, but about how directors, such as Terrence Malik and Andrei Tarkovsky can use early morning or late afternoon sunlight to illuminate and colour gorgeous views. Zhang Yimou in Hero and House of Flying Daggers creates beauty by combining red and yellow leaf litters swirling around white forests of birch, setting the backdrop for amazingly choreographed sword fights. Sunset Song made me fall in love with Scotland and The Revenant made me want to be lost in the Great North American wilderness.
Do you think I've missed any? I'd love to hear about others like these!
