Summary: Delightful
Delightful in not a word that really applies to many things in our stressed out world. Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson are delightful and so is this 1940 production of Pride and Prejudice. It is as true to the spirit of Jane Austen as old Hollywood could ever achieve. Lady Catherine is the only major change and Edna May Oliver is very funny as Darcy's curmudgeonly aunt. Curmudgeons were always much beloved characters in old Hollywood movies. Greer Garson is more than delightful as Elizabeth. She is lovely, charming and witty. She has always been one of my favorite actresses, but as Elizabeth she truly sparkles. She brims with joy and life. It is almost as if she were born to play Elizabeth. Laurence Olivier wasn't born to play Darcy - he is Darcy. He is as haughty, cold, handsome and as prideful as Elizabeth is prejudiced. No matter how great the 1995 production is, I will always have a special love for this movie. It introduced me to Jane Austen. Because of this Pride and Prejudice, I read the book in high school. Since then, I have read P&P many times, as well as Sense & Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park and Persuasion.

Summary: One of my all time favorite movies
I really love this movie. I have no idea how many times I have seen it. It gets better every time. Steel Magnolias may be the best "womans" movie ever made. It is about adult women whose friendship sustains and strengthens them. Many movies are made about the friendships between men (the ever popular buddy movies). Many movies are made about romance and the relationships between men and women (chick flicks). However few movies are made about relationships among women and of those that are made, many are about the negative aspects of relationships. And finally, as mentioned by one of the other reviewers, it does not stress female relationships at the expense of the men in the film.

Summary: Profoundly Moving
Before the movie came out, I had already read To Kill a Mockingbird at least 3 times. I was in junior high then and one of my friends gave me a copy and told me that I HAD to read it. I think I was only through about two chapters when I bought my own copy and returned hers. I finally wore that copy out I read it so many times.
I really didn't want to see the movie. I was afraid that it would somehow profane a book that touched my soul more deeply than anything I had read up to that time. But the same friend who gave me the book told me I HAD to see the movie. I went to see To Kill a Mockingbird by myself. I wanted to be able to leave the theater if it wasn't as good as I had been told.
It was better than I had been told. It was as good as the book. Gregory Peck, Mary Badham and the others in the movie gave faces and voices and an outside to people I already knew from the inside. It was a profound and profoundly moving book that became a profound and profoundly moving motion picture. And in one small way, it was even better than the book - the music. It has one of the most beautiful musical scores ever written for a movie. The music does not dominate or overwhelm, but it enfolds the story with grace and beauty.
If I were required to pick the greatest movie ever made, I would not be able to choose between To Kill a Mockingbird and The Shawshank Redemption. Other movies are, perhaps, technically more perfect. Some movies, such as Citizen Kane, have influenced the art of making motion pictures in many ways. But To Kill a Mockingbird touches the soul and leaves you feeling cleaner for having seen it.

Summary: One of the finest movies I have ever seen
First let me say that I am not a football fan. I hate it. It is a boring, slow and incomprehensible game in which guys run around patting each other on the butt.
Brian's Song is not a football movie. It is a movie about decency and honor and dreams. Thirty two years and a big budget remake have not dimmed the luster of this profound and touching movie. We often make fun of the quality of television productions. Brian's Song is as fine a movie as any ever made with big budgets and big stars.
I don't think anyone can watch Brian's Song without feeling something touch their soul. James Caan as Brian Piccolo and Billie Dee Williams as Gale Sayers give two of the finest performances of their careers bringing to life the friendship and courage of these two football players whose lives rise far above the game they play.

Summary: I love this movie
Fried Green Tomatoes is a movie with 2 stories: Idgie and Ruth, and Evelyn and Ninnie. It is about friendship and love and how friendship and love can sustain women through hard times and crises. Idgie gives Ruth strength and Ruth gives Idgie redemption. Without Idgie's strength, Ruth would have buried and broken by her violent husband. Without Ruth's love, Idgie's wildness would have destroyed her in the end. They became more than the sum of their parts. Ninnie's early life had been so full of love, from Idgie & Ruth, from her husband and son, that it still illuminates her present life, even though she old and in a nursing home. Ninnie gave some of that love and strength to Evelyn and helped Evelyn survive her journey to self enlightenment. I love this movie. I made me laugh (Evenlyn's husband asking her how she could accidentally hit another car a dozen times) and it made me cry. It is a wonderful tribute to the sustenance that can be derived from true friendship.

Summary: Excellent production
This was an excellent production of Much Ado, my favorite Shakespeare comedy. Beatrice and Benedick have been my favorite Shakespearean lovers ever since I saw the 1973 Joseph Papp production starring Sam Waterston, in his pre Jack McCoy days, as Benedick. I would like to recommend this version of Much Ado to anyone who is trying interested in Shakespeare. It is one of the most accessible Shakespearean movies I have ever seen. Kenneth Branagh obviously worked very hard to make the dialog understandable to modern viewers. Branagh is always good in Shakespeare and Emma Thompson is delightfully spirited as Beatrice. It was filmed at a villa in Italy and it is as much a treat for the eye as it is for the ear. It would have been a perfect production if it had not been for Michael Keaton as Dogberry. He tried to use some strange accent and I couldn't understand a word he said. Too bad, because Dogberry has some very funny line.

Summary: Tied for the best movie I have ever seen
Why do I want to write the 234th comment on The Shawshank Redemption? I am not sure - almost everything that could be possibly said about it has been said. But like so many other people who wrote comments, I was and am profoundly moved by this simple and eloquent depiction of hope and friendship and redemption.
The only other movie I have ever seen that effects me as strongly is To Kill a Mockingbird. Both movies leave me feeling cleaner for having watched them.
I didn't intend to see this movie at all: I do not like prison movies and I don't normally watch them. I work at a branch library and one day as I was checking The Shawshank Redemption out to one of our older patrons, she said to me, "Whenever I feel down or depressed, I check out this movie and watch it and it always makes me feel better." At the time, I thought that was very strange. One day there was nothing on TV except things I absolutely would not watch under any circumstance or things that I had seen too many times already. I remembered what she said, so I watched it. I have watched it many many times since then and it gets better with every showing.
No action, no special effects - just men in prison uniforms talking to each other.
The Shawshank Redemption and To Kill a Mockingbird) are the best movies I have ever seen. I do not judge it by it's technical merits - I don't really care about that. I have read that Citizen Kane or The Godfather or this or that movie is the best movie ever made. They may have the best technique or be the most influential motion pictures ever made, but not the best. The best movies are ones that touch the soul. It takes a movie like The Shawshank Redemption to touch the soul.
