- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. This is how we superhero fans like it: superhero movies that take themselves seriously. I was skeptical that Christopher Nolan could outdo himself after Batman Begins but he did so with the very entertaining Dark Knight. It's a bit long and has two peaks but Nolan pulls it off.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanIan McKellenIn a world where mutants (evolved super-powered humans) exist and are discriminated against, two groups form for an inevitable clash: the supremacist Brotherhood, and the pacifist X-Men.X-men is probably a bit overrated here on my list but we should all take off our hats and capes for ushering in a new era of superhero movies that don't suck. I like the slow, deliberate pacing of the film, and it's a nice study on how to properly develop multiple characters--something woefully lacking in later hero movies. The only real knock I have against X-men is that the action feels a bit generic and underwhelming.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity. The first third is a bit sloppy, but it comes together nicely. Very enjoyable summer movie.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleMichael CaineKen WatanabeAfter witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city.Dark and gritty, like the 90s Batman Animated Series. I think it indulged Western audiences a bit too much at certain points (who likes ninjas? I do, I do!), but it's great storytelling. Also, Nolan is fairly adept at putting together entertaining action scenes that the audience can actually follow.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonSamuel L. JacksonHolly HunterWhile trying to lead a quiet suburban life, a family of undercover superheroes are forced into action to save the world. The Incredibles is both a hilarious superhero spoof and a terrific superhero movie in and of itself. Can Pixar ever go wrong? (Unfortunately, yes, as we've seen in some of the latter movies)
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstWillem DafoeAfter being bitten by a genetically-modified spider, a shy teenager gains spider-like abilities that he uses to fight injustice as a masked superhero and face a vengeful enemy.Spider-Man has some of the best, most entertaining sequences showing the hero learning about his powers. The development and pacing are spot on throughout.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanHalle BerryWhen anti-mutant Colonel William Stryker kidnaps Professor X and attacks his school, the X-Men must ally with their archenemy Magneto to stop him.A very nice follow-up for X-men 1. Many viewers rate X2 over X-men. X2 has some very memorable scenes, but I still prefer X-men. Unfortunately, this is the last X-men movie that resonated with me.
- DirectorBob PersichettiPeter RamseyRodney RothmanStarsShameik MooreJake JohnsonHailee SteinfeldTeen Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.Everything a modern super hero should be. Visually bold, thoroughly entertaining, respectful of its legacy, and yet stubbornly creative.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.Entertaining movie that actually dares to challenge its viewers. In hindsight, Age of Ultron is probably best thought of as a messy setup for the superior Civil War.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris HemsworthMark RuffaloThe Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.Very entertaining for sure, but feels overwhelming and oppressive at times. A perfect build up for part two.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.Singer demonstrates that he can still balance an elaborate, almost excessive plot with coherent storytelling. As with his prior efforts, Singer is able to show off the various super powers in memorable and entertaining fashion.
- DirectorJoaquim Dos SantosKemp PowersJustin K. ThompsonStarsShameik MooreHailee SteinfeldBrian Tyree HenryMiles Morales catapults across the multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthTom HiddlestonCate BlanchettImprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela. One thing that really stood out to me in this thoroughly enjoyable addition to the MCU is the visual pop (further enhanced by the perfect accompanying score). It's a really interesting blend of retro and modern, with just enough campiness and an appropriately excessive level of color saturation.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe. The word epic tends to get over-used nowadays, but it seems appropriate here.
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsChris HemsworthAnthony HopkinsNatalie PortmanThe powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders. This movie could easily have been a disaster. Instead, it was a well developed and pleasant surprise and a lot of fun.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil. Not a fantastic super hero movie, nor a remarkable super hero movie. But Iron Man just manages to cover all the basics well enough to make a fun, entertaining, competant comic book movie.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineRobin WrightWhen a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny. Finally filled a hole in the hearts of long-suffering DC fans. All in all, a well done movie. Wasn't afraid to tackle some super hero issues a bit more deeply than other blockbuster action movies.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.Riveting and well made. In fact, it's so stark and brutal, it doesn't quite feel like part of the franchise.
- DirectorStephen NorringtonStarsWesley SnipesStephen DorffKris KristoffersonA half-vampire, half-mortal man becomes a protector of the mortal race, while slaying evil vampires.Great action and a precursor of many action movie trends-- camera shots, costume fashions, high contrast color tones. Heck, this movie did VAMPIRES before they became hot hot hot.
- DirectorRichard LesterStarsGene HackmanChristopher ReeveMargot KidderSuperman agrees to sacrifice his powers to start a relationship with Lois Lane, unaware that three Kryptonian criminals he inadvertently released are conquering Earth.I originally rated Superman I very highly . . . until I rewatched both I and II and realized that many of the seminal scenes I loved from I were actually from II. Like so many other Superhero franchises, Superman fell off a kryptonite cliff after number 2.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsChadwick BosemanMichael B. JordanLupita Nyong'oT'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country's past.Another great addition to the MCU. Thematically intriguing and lots of great characters. Some of the blander action sequences that we've seen in recent super hero movies.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.A surprising amount of heart amidst all those gags and meta references.
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandSamuel L. JacksonJake GyllenhaalFollowing the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.Another excellent entry. Does a nice job staying focused on a central theme. The current crop of live-action and animated Spidey movies really are a treat.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleTom HardyAnne HathawayEight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.Good movie, but its predecessors were so much more carefully spun. The movie feels unorganized and not as well thought out. I was honestly a bit disappointed.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddMichael DouglasCorey StollArmed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, pull off a plan that will save the world.Just when you thought the tank was running on empty, Marvel pulls out this fun, whimsical take on the super hero.
