Doctors now tell him he has only a few months to live and advise him to go to Maine (where, evidently, it will seem longer.) He asks Joan to marry him, promising to leave her his fortune. She, no dummy, accepts but hard-loser Fred doesn't like it even though she says she is doing it for him. After six months of living in a lighthouse with only Joan and Sparrow, whom he has hired as his aide, Sinclaie seemingly regains his health and has really fallen in love with Joan. She tells him she can no longer tolerate the loneliness just as Fred arrives for a visit, and John invites him to stay. In a chess game, John facetiously outlines to Fred how he would murder him if he chose to. Fred, decides to beat him to the punch and enters his bedroom that night and attempts to kill John with a poker. The figure in the bed turns out to be a dummy and John, who has been hiding, clubs Fred to death. He tries to throw the body from the bedroom window but it won't open and, planning to return and force it open later, he carries the body to the rocks and then hits Fred's head with a stone. Returning to the lighthouse, John meets Sparrow and tells him that Fred fell from a window but Sparrow knows all the windows have been nailed shut. And Joan, who saw John carry the body out, has summoned the police.
- A drifter claims the money in an old bank account by impersonating someone else with the same name. Soon he finds himself the target of a man who turns out to be the son of the old partner of the impersonated man's father, who caused his partner to do time in prison.

Two other people are murdered before Ordway discovers who replaced the insulin with poison and what the motive was.

The assailant runs down a policeman in the truck and leaves other clues pointing to Reynolds as the cop killer. With only a glove, with diamonds stuck in the thumb, as a clue, and while evading the police and other characters after him and the diamonds, Reynolds finally runs down the guilty party and clears himself.

Three deaths occur with the first two being typhoid-caused but the death of the third person, Ward Beachey, is a case of poisoning. Orday learns that Beachey was the town Romeo with many enemies and that most of those had access to the poison. Doc Millerson, who has a suspicion who the guilty party is, receives a note in a woman's handwriting requesting a meeting at the river bank. He goes there and is killed in an ambush by a rifle shot. Following the note as a clue, Ordway visits the house of Ezra Minnich and traps Minnich's young daughter into confessing that her father made her write the note. Minnich confesses he had killed Beachey for trying to break up his home and Doc Millerson because he suspected him.

Webster Hackett (Alan Mowbray), a very devious "Cosmetics King", intent on selling a big lipstick order to buyer Edgar Pomeroy (Thurston Hall), that it will cost him $1000 to join the association and get a booth, which is about $999 more than Miller and his room-mates have between them. But Miller's beauty parlor girlfriend, Janet Wilson (Ann Savage), meets factory-owner P. G. Grimble (Hugh Herbert), and money is soon no issue.
- Two mysterious seamen come from Alan Rogers' past to blackmail him as he seeks to locate his missing daughters. Ellery Queen is called in by Stewart Cole, Rogers' secretary. Queen goes to the estate and finds one daughter already there and the second one expected. When she arrives, it is Ellery's secretary Nikki Porter posing as the daughter as Ellery had her intercept the real heiress after learning of a plot to swindle Rogers. The blackmailing seamen are killed at a waterfront café after getting the blackmail money, Rogers is suspected and Inspector Queen arrives to arrest him, but he is also found dead.

Investigating the case, Ordway finds that the business of the legal copying art masterworks may also be involved.

As Bob enters the Shonto area, he rescues Sandra Cullen and her little brother Buzzy from a mad steer and is invited to remain at the herding camp as a guest of the Cullens. When Bob goes to Sayres' casino, Sayres' first-in-command, Sneed, tries to disarm him, but Bob is too quick for him. Sayres is impressed by Bob's abilities and hires him after firing Sneed, and Bob's first assignment is to rustle the Cullen herd. Sneed warns Cullen of the raid, and Bob, who has gone along with the raid in order to maintain his cover, is confronted by defending cowhands. Bob easily escapes; however, when Cullen sees him talking with Hal, he tells Sayres of their ruse. Sandra, who has fallen in love with Bob, defends him from her father, but both Bob and Hal are later captured by Sayres' gang. Bob and Hal learn that the gang is plotting to kidnap Sandra and Buzzy as protection against a posse, and the two lawmen escape and lead the gang across the border as planned. The outlaws are captured and Sandra and Bob are reunited.
