- In the spring of 1942, the New Zealand government presents the U.S. a 70-year-old wooden twin-masted schooner. The US military decides to use the ship to place spies ashore behind Japanese lines.
- Pharmacist's Mate Tyler who has been drafted to act as the Kiwi's cook overhears the crew talking about about what a terrible cook he is and so requests a transfer. When he gets the transfer he is re-assigned to a lab as a janitor and so feels even worse. Meanwhile the crew is having difficulty replacing him and also begin to terribly miss their old shipmate and try to get him back.
- The Japanese have captured three American WACs, one of whom is an Intelligence Officer with vital information on a planned operation. Intelligence has sent an assassin to eliminate her but he too does not know which of the three is the target. Major Butcher counter-proposes a rescue mission to get the women out of Japanese hands before they are handed over to the interrogators.

She has a chip on her shoulder and a secret reason why she volunteered. Along the way she saves the life of a Japanese Officer which wins her no friends on the Kiwi.

- An ambitious newspaperwoman is intrigued by the Navy having a schooner such as the Kiwi and so stows away on their next mission. The Captain is ticked off and so he and Major Butcher strand her with friendly natives while they complete their dangerous mission. All goes well until they find out the island has been occupied by the Japanese in their absence.
