Barto and Audrey frolic but aren't ready for intimacy again. When Jill finds out Duncan is in jail, Mikey presumes he'll be best man, preoccupied only with the stag night stripper; when Jill reports Jack's apparent disappointment about the ring, Barto tells she saw him; Jill realizes it's another one and tells Jack he bought that one for Elisa; in the end both girls understand. The question why he asked Duncan in high school, weird for boys, makes David admit he considered proposing to his then girlfriend Jenny; Jack calls him a 'serial engager', he retorts she even got Danny to the altar and lived together with Matt; Elisa makes her realize Jill only actually proposed to her. When Barto sighs he told Audrey he's an all-or-nothing man but she failed go for all of him, Mikey consoles Barto saying he is to be best man, with Mikey as honorary best man in charge of the bachelor night. Eliza was asking a superior out, but decides to go alone, even though David, having to cancel, gave her tickets for two, and lands in a one-man version of Casabanca by the unknown Hugh Westland. - Barto has aced his scholarship, so he will soon be separated three months from Hollywood-débutante Audrey, who enjoys her agent Dan rolling out the red carpet for her. As he starts by introducing B-star client Paris Everett at the At-bar, her lifelong fan Mikey grabs his chance to meet and charm her into a date, but startles the boys by announcing a novel technique for the quick womanizer: he won't make a second move till she's dying for him. Dragged along to L.A. during their last days, Barto gets annoyed till he tells Audrey how self-absorbed she behaves, and ends up being caught leaving bed with a certain Annie. At Barto's suggestion, the apartment is sublet as a whole, so Jill moves in with Jack at least for the three months it's empty; they wrestle with practical details and the very notion of a temporary move, and finally decide it's too soon to live together. Paris ultimately shows more interest in Elisa and walks off. Just when Audrey's plane leaves, Barto comes propose, but gets no reply.

Shirtless boys get frisky in the morning all around. Elisa has rats fumigated, so she's invited to stay a week with Jack, without asking Jill; they find Audrey's pregnancy test kit, Barto later too and he's really upset not to have been told; when he finally asks, she says not to be ready for a family ever, unlike him. Mikey gets scarily close to love for Lucy, but hasn't told her he never moved out from his parents, so when Belinda has her flat it's 'home' again at Jill's, where he comes clean- no problem, yet he starts looking for a place- which does scare her, breaking his heart and his moving resolve. When the secret betrayals come out, the boys make up in a jiffy, the girls bitch absurdly first. The rats stay, the rent gets raised: Elisa wants another place; Mikey had found somewhere perfect, for two that is, so...
- Jill moves in with Elisa and has a shot at a job opening, for which suck-up fellow intern Steve is also in line. Jack's unfaithful fiancé Danny Hallahan, all the way from Boston, turns up on their doorstep and then at her work and makes an appointment, for which Audrey helps her rehearsing. Now Jill has moved out, Mikey invites himself to move in with Barto -who is too nice to admit he doesn't want such an immature roommate- and helps himself to the Zakamatak prototype Jill took home believing it was rejected, yet is requested urgently by Jill's boss Stanley Ashton for their Japanese licensing company Taki Toys's representative, Mr. Tanaka, uses it as a sex-toy and leaves it with his girl-friend Jennifer, who in turn passed on the Zakamatak to her roommate Heather, who is out of town for a week. Jill meets Danny and convinces him Jack has another. Elisa breaks up with Jill, which spares Barto throwing out Mikey. Jack should ace the proofing test, but runs away to see Danny again, even kisses him, then runs off to Elisa, where Jill was not feeling at home anyway, then accepts to travel back to Boston, till the moment is there...

Audrey finds out abruptly her roommate's idea of casual morning dress and sleepwear is just his own skin. Jack is determined to make up with Elisa by becoming friends with Peter, while his superior knowledge and experience on everything drive Elisa mad and away from 'them'. Barto, on a time-out with his girl-friend, hopes the flirtatious waitress Bethany is into him, Mikey doubts that.
- Roommates Russell and Audrey are equally surprised to wake up together after a memorably hot night, but next morning she says that's not to be repeated often, then insists on a domestic chores schedule. Elisa can't justify why she broke up with Peter, Jack advices against calling to make up; when she does anyway, the sex is great, yet for her that's no basis to stay more then friends. When Mikey serves as his diagnosis test patient, Barto is delighted to find his friend is a medical rarity because of 'situs inversus', i.e. right-side internal organs at the left and vice versa, a big hit with Dr. Madison and his class, but Madison is even less amused then Barto when Mikey keeps making a fuss about his condition. Jack and Jill go reserve a Catholic church as her mother insists, but must first take a couples course. A PC crash while he prepares the bar's tax return makes him miss their first appointment with the parish priest, her insensitive sneer his bar problems are insignificant really hurts. After talking to each apart, Father Conlin tells the pair their romantic ideal is no realistic basis, so they need intense counseling.

So Jack goes to New York, where her friend Audrey works in Broadway. 'Jill' is short for David Jillefsky, a graduated engineer and gifted artist who keeps rooming with golden spoon but brilliant med student Bartholomew 'Barto' Zane and drop-out Michael 'Mikey' Russo, rather then move in with his sexy girl-friend Elisa Cronkite. As soon as Jill meets his new neighbor Jack, the chemistry starts and he considers breaking up with Elisa. To complicate matters, the only job interview which works out for Jack -well, it actually proves to be an unpaid internship- is at the TV station WNKW where Elisa works and soon becomes her friend, while Audrey brings Jack to the bar which Mikey tends, and Jill and Barto therefore always hang out. Soon they all meet each-other all the time, and become friends. Jill reassures Barto worrying about cutting, even in a corps, only proves he is a caring human, and he aces it.

Now the two share an apartment, Mikey invents the roommate 'forum!' to tell Elisa he didn't want her to break into his date and keeps hopping from one conquest to the next; she even meddles by telling Gaby he never goes steady, which in his explicit words sucks, Jill tries to reassure him, Gaby has her own Todd. At a Moroccan restaurant Jack puts 'I love you' on the couscous table; later she says she liked it better when he constantly wooed her, he retorts that's not just his job all the time, deal with it. Audrey says she has broken up with director Travis Cutler, but he can get her a very desirable theater part, so to Jack's disgust she stays with him. Jack is assigned health code violations in New York restaurants, so she goes undercover as dishwasher in Chateau Noir, where she finds and chases with a hidden camera a black rat, but didn't check the actually blank results before having the piece announced, fails smuggling in a pet rat and looses the expensive camera- returning for it proves an unexpected opportunity... Barto is worried to find Mikey gets computerized career potential analysis; Jill turns his depression about the resulting advice, priesthood -not obvious for the ladies man- by saying the job is a spiritual adviser and good listener, like Mikey, who continues practicing those virtues as barman, but later learns the results were switched: his vocation would be park ranger. Discusted by his market-mind, Jill tells the new boss not to respect him, yet is asked to stay and make good toys.
- The friends are invited to the wedding of Jill's ex Becky Hart; Mikey looks forward to lots of dating opportunities; asking Jack as his date perhaps wasn't Jill's best move, as she considers it their first meeting anniversary, which he discards because she ran out on him. The youths look great in party frock. Audrey didn't even want Barto to pick her up at the airport, nor picks up when he's on the phone, yet ends up showing up and dancing with him in tender embrace, the he kisses hotly but she hasn't decided yet what she now wants.
