In a year that includes a new Deadpool outing, George Miller’s return to the Fury Road, and a Dune sequel, it’s saying something that for many, the most anticipated movie of 2024 – and the one with the biggest question mark around it – is Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Earning his place in the pantheon of cinema’s greatest directors with Apocalypse Now, the Godfather movies and more, Coppola is an auteur whose return deserves our attention. But with his comeback film having been gestating for decades, not to mention requiring Coppola to shell out millions of his own dollars for the production, it demands it.
Set in a Roman Empire-inspired reimagining of New York City, Megalopolis stars Adam Driver as Cesar Catalina, an architect with physics-defying powers and dreams of building a utopian society. That dream sees him clash with the city’s Mayor, Frank Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who...

Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion-project, Megalopolis, screened at the Cannes Film Festival last night, and the first reviews for the sci-fi epic have now been shared online.
Depending on which critics you choose to trust, the movie is either a masterpiece, an unmitigated disaster, or somewhere in between!
Despite reports of audiences giving the film a 10-minute standing ovation, reviews have been decidedly mixed, which is represented by an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%.
Only 22 verdicts have been added so far, so this score is sure to change when press screening take place down the line. But with such a polarizing reaction, we don't anticipate it fluctuating too much.
Have a read through some of the reviews at the links below.

As audiences take their seats for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis in Cannes, we have a big update on the status of the movie's theatrical release.
Despite speculation that the legendary Godfather director's self-funded passion project might struggle to find a distributor (there was already some concern before the recent controversies), it's just been announced that the sci-fi epic has been given a global IMAX release.
“The film is going to get an IMAX release,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told the press during a Cannes event earlier today. “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global Imax release.”
Gelford added that he'd met with Coppola in Cannes, and that they would most likely wait to see who will distribute the film in the U.S. and when before deciding on a theatrical release date. The film...

Francis Ford Coppola will finally unveil Megalopolis at the Cannes Film Festival next week, but a new report outlining the legendary filmmaker's on-set antics could make the already daunting task of finding a distributor for the film even more challenging.
We've heard some stories about behind-the-scenes turmoil during the production of the $120 million+ sci-fi epic, but it sounds like the shoot may have been even more chaotic than previous reports suggested.
Following the debut of yesterday's trailer, The Guardian published a piece detailing some of the (alleged) behaviour of the Apocalypse Now director.
Among other things, it's said that Coppola chose to sit in his trailer smoking weed for hours on end while the cast and crew were waiting to film. He has also been accused of pulling scantily clad or naked female extras onto his lap and attempting to kiss them to "get them in the mood."

The Cannes Film Festival officially kicks off today with the latest from Quentin Dupieux, but Francis Ford Coppola has decided to truly begin the festivities with a bang. After a brief, enticing tease earlier this month, he’s now debuted the epic first trailer for Megalopolis, chock full of jaw-dropping images that has us counting down the hours until Thursday’s world premiere. “Our new film Megalopolis is the best work I’ve ever had the privilege to preside over,” notes Coppola with the trailer.
Along with French distribution from Le Pacte, the film was also picked up by Constantin Film for Germany and all German-speaking territories, including Switzerland and Austria; Eagle Pictures for Italy; Tripictures for Spain; and Entertainment Film Distributors Limited for the U.K., per Deadline. A U.S. deal has yet to be announced, but here’s hoping it comes during the festival.

Ahead of the movie's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, the first trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's sci-fi passion project, Megalopolis, has been released online.
Really more of a scene preview than a proper teaser, the footage sees Adam Driver's character, Caesar, step out on to the ledge of a building and walk precariously towards the edge. Caesar then begins to topple forward, but before he falls, he yells "time stop," and freezes in place. After a few moments, he snaps his fingers and the world around him returns to normal.
Coppola shared the clip on Instagram, with a sad addendum.
"Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf."

Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" has been in the works for decades, and at last, the first clip from the film has been released ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere later this month. It's just two minutes long, but the film finally feels real, not like a vanished dream.
We at /Film named "Megalopolis" one of our most anticipated movies of 2024, and it should be one of yours too. It's the "Godfather" director's first film since 2011's "Twixt," and it was self-financed (meaning creative freedom for Coppola). It also boasts an incredible ensemble, led by Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito.
In "Megalopolis," a city is destroyed in a natural disaster. Idealistic urban planner Cesar (Driver) and Mayor Frank Cicero (Esposito) clash on their visions to rebuild the city, with Cicero's daughter Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel) coming between them. I’ve predicted Megalopolis, anticipated as it is, will have a clear dividing point: the cultural commentariat hoping to see “another film by the director of The Godfather” and those who appreciate “something that looks and sounds like a Star Wars prequel.” I am very firmly in the latter, was duly excited by the first image, and can only be pleased with the time-stopping debut teaser, arriving today via Le Pacte.
It comes with a sad addenedum. Coppola, sharing the teaser on Instagram, noted:

The Francis Ford Coppola passion project Megalopolis, an idea the 85-year-old filmmaker says has been brewing in his mind for around half of his life, is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. In anticipation of the Cannes screening, the maestro himself, Coppola, has released our first look at some of the movie’s footage. It came with a sweet dedication to his late wife, Eleanor, reading:

Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded feature Megalopolis has revealed a first look image after landing a Cannes competition berth.
The project follows the rebuilding of a metropolis after it has fallen into decline, with two competing visions — one from the idealist architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), the other from corrupt Mayor Frank Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito — colliding.
The first official image from Megalopolis reveals Driver eyeing a rebuilding of the City of New Rome, while Nathalie Emmanuel, as Julia Cicero, the socialite daughter of Mayor Cicero, looks on. Megalopolis is structured as a Roman epic fable set in an imagined modern America.
To rebuild New Rome, Julia Cicero ultimately comes between a Cesar Catilina she falls in love with and Frank Cicero whom she remains loyal to as her father, as the two men battle with competing visions.

Though Megalopolis still doesn't have a distributor, the movie is expected to release before the end of the year, and we have a first official look at the sci-fi epic's main characters.
A lot of people were pleasantly surprised when Francis Ford Coppola's passion project came to fruition after the legendary filmmaker's previous failed attempts to get his vision off the ground, but the Godfather director announced that he had returned to the project back in 2019, and cameras started rolling in 2022.
Despite reports of some significant production issues, the movie wrapped late last year, and Vanity Fair has now shared the first official stills.
The images feature Star Wars actor Adam Driver as "an idealistic architect named Caesar, who hopes to rebuild the once great city, while Game of Thrones alum Emmanuel plays Julia Cicero, "the socialite daughter of a corrupt mayor (played by Giancarlo Esposito), and Driver’s character’s nemesis.

Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi passion project Megalopolis is to screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Megalopolis, the long-in-the-making sci-fi opus from director Francis Ford Coppola, is still seeking a distributor, but it’s also set to make its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
There have been reports for a while that Coppola’s latest movie would make an appearance at the festival, but now it’s been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Megalopolis will screen in competition on the 17th May – meaning it’s in contention for a coveted Palme d’Or prize. Deadline reports that Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis will officially premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th.
The project has been a long time coming, as Coppola began writing Megalopolis back in the 1980s but recognized that it would require a huge budget to match its massive scope, so it sat on a shelf for decades. In order to get the film made, he put his own money on the line, reportedly upwards of $120 million. The film also boasts quite a star-studded ensemble cast, which includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Db Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar.

Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited “Megalopolis” will have its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, IndieWire has confirmed.
While the full festival lineup will be announced April 10, Deadline first reported that the epic has received the gala premiere slot at Cannes for a May 17 debut and that it will play in competition.
However, “Megalopolis” still has not secured distribution, IndieWire understands. Coppola’s attorney Barry Hirsch is working on selling the film, and he previously told IndieWire the film was unlikely to debut at a festival until it landed distribution.
The feature will be Coppola’s return to Cannes following his respective Palme d’Or wins for “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now.” His other Cannes film was “Tetro,” which screened in Directors Fortnight.

Francis Ford Coppola is shrugging off retirement rumors ahead of the release of his sprawling self-financed film “Megalopolis.”
Coppola had been developing the original story for “Megalopolis” for close to 30 years, with Deadline reporting that the auteur lost 75 pounds to increase his stamina to complete the script. The 84-year-old filmmaker told the outlet that despite “Megalopolis” being a “big, difficult” movie, it is in no way his swan song.
In fact, his next upcoming project is finally what led Coppola to consider “Megalopolis” as complete.
“One way I knew ‘Megalopolis’ was finished is that I’ve begun work on a new film,” Coppola said. “It won’t be cheap by any means, but I don’t know it can be called ‘an epic film.'”
